Salary: $24.00 Hourly

Position Summary:

Start your law enforcement career with hands-on experience and a clear path to becoming a police officer. As a Community Service Officer, you’ll gain valuable experience working alongside officers while attending an accredited post-secondary institution to prepare for POST licensure. Successful CSOs are promoted to police officer upon meeting licensing requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Apply St. Louis Park Police Department’s community-oriented policing philosophy in the course of regular duties.
  • Responsible for animal complaints including citation, capture, detention and transportation to designated veterinary shelter.
  • Respond to parking complaints and take enforcement action when appropriate.
  • Assist:
    • With care and maintenance of all department equipment.
    • Other departments including, but not limited to, delivering council packets, cash deposits, fingerprinting, etc.
    • The investigations division in returning property, recovered or used as evidence, to owner, and with other matters.
  • Write clear and complete police reports in accordance with department policy.
  • Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as directed by department personnel.

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age.
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Valid MN driver’s license.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must be enrolled in a peace officer education program, or similar law enforcement program, by time of hire.
  • Ability to:
    • Pass a comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation and medical evaluation.
    • Learn the geography of St. Louis Park, including important buildings and the street system.
    • Obtain and retain knowledge of federal and state statutes, city ordinances, and other directives related to law enforcement procedures and police department operations.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated competence and comfort with supporting the city’s strategic objectives for advancing racial equity.
  • Ability to speak a second language fluently.
  • Computer experience.
