Position Summary:

Under the administrative supervision of the Dispatch Supervisor and the operational supervision of the shift supervisor, the Telecommunicator provides all communication functions, information, and reporting support for the Police Department.

Essential Functions:

  • Keep records, logs, and schedules of the calls received and actions taken utilizing a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS).
  • Handles all emergency and non-emergency telephone calls for the Police Department at all three Harper College Campuses: Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Schaumburg.
  • Handles all communications via radio and telephone for all Harper College Campuses: Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Schaumburg.
  • Responsible for Emergency Notifications to the College Community via Public Address Systems (informacast) systems, etc.
  • Monitors and maintains the location of all Harper College Police Personnel, as well as assisting emergency response personnel from neighboring agencies, when responding to a Harper College Campus incident at all three Harper College Campuses.
  • Monitors and maintains Harper College Fire Alarm System, Panic Alarms, Hold Up alarms, surveillance cameras, and other various security systems.
  • Staffs the Emergency Door Locking System for emergency use.
  • Conducts and partakes in Emergency radio, Disaster, Fire Alarm drill:;, etc.
  • Coordinates and maintains all Law Enforcement Agency Data Systems (LEADS)/National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) queries, entries, modifications, and cancellations.
  • Acts as the conduit between surrounding agencies for mutual aid requests and responses. Monitors radios for surrounding jurisdictions for emergency traffic with a potential adverse effect upon the Harper College Campuses including Palatine, Prospect Heights, Schaumburg, Illinois State Police, and the Cook County Sheriffs Police Department State Police Emergency Radio System (ISPERN).
  • Updates and maintains after-hour parking, contractor sign in’s, distribution and collections of keys, monitors campus-wide cameras, other duties as assigned.
  • Staffs the Police Department Public Information Window:
  • Supplies information to the public
  • Gives directions
  • Walk-up service to the public, i.e. vehicle jump starts, vehicle lock-outs, etc
  • Takes initial information for service
  • Registered Sex Offender/Violent Offender Against Youth Institution of Higher Education Registrations
  • Various other receptionist duties
  • Issues Parking Permits
  • Records and maintains the status of Harper College Police Parking Citations, Traffic Citations, Racial Profile Information.
  • Receives, records, and maintains the status of Harper Colleges’ “Lost & Found” items.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.

Requirements:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Law Enforcement Agency Data Systems (LEADS)/National Crime Information Computer (NCI() certification(s) or previous certification in another state’s equivalent system preferred.
  • Experience: Experience in Emergency (Police/Fire/EMS) Dispatching utilizing a Computer.
  • Aided Dispatch System (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS).
