Police Officer Hiring Process – Written Exam

The written test may be given to everyone who applies, or just to those who have been screened as meeting the minimum requirements. The written test is generally a multiple choice exam. However, this can include variations including some writing samples or even written a short essay. The purpose of the written test is to evaluate a variety of attributes including:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Ability to summarize information
  • Math
  • Vocabulary
  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Remembering Information

Police Written Test

If you are applying for an entry-level position, you are not expected to know police procedures or search and seizure. But what is expected of you is good spelling, punctuation, and math skills etc. You will learn the police part in the academy. However, an applicant will need to bring basic reading, writing and math skills.

How the Written Test is Scored?

Most written tests are scored pass/fail, with passing the exam being a requirement to move on to the Oral Board Interview portion. However, it could be graded on a scale of 1-100.
