National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) Questions

US Capitol PoliceThis test is an entry-level basic skills tests that helps agencies determine if candidate possess the basic skills necessary to be a law enforcement officer. There are four sections to the NPOST. There is reading comprehension, grammar, math, and incident report writing. Candidates have 75-minutes to complete all four sections of the exam. The largest agencies using the NPOST include the U.S. Capitol Police, Tempe, Indianapolis Police Department, Maryland and New Mexico State Troopers, the Montana, Utah, and Wyoming Highway Patrol

 

Math Section

Utah Highway PatrolThe math portion consists of 20 elements and you will be given 20-minutes to complete this section. Here you will be given a situation that includes using basic math. After having read each section you will solve the arithmetic situation. During the math portion you will be provide scratch paper for your calculations, however, calculators are not allowed.

Reading Comprehension

Tempe Police DepartmentThe ready comprehension portion includes 25 elements and there is 25-minutes to complete this portion. The section consists of reading a section about police work, then answering questions about what has been read. No knowledge about law enforcement or prior law enforcement experience is necessary.

Grammar

Wyoming Highway PatrolThe grammar potion includes 20 elements and there is 15-minutes to complete this portion. In this section there are two different forms of questions. The first form consists of reading incomplete sentences and the selecting which best finishes the sentence. With the second form a question you will be given sentences that include spelling errors and you will need to select a replacement that contained the incorrect spelled word.

 

Writing Skills

Maryland State TrooperThe writing skills portion has 10 elements with a time limit of 15-minutes. With the writing skills portion you will be provided a sample incident. Then, you will answer questions that are posed, using the information provided in the incident. You answers must be well written and provide correct information as contained in the sample incident.
