NCJOSI Police Test Questions

The National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory Police Officer Exam, or NCJOSI, is a two part exam which lasts 90-minutes. The first part contains 45 questions and is the cognitive portion of the exam. This section includes mathematics, reading comprehension, writing ability, and problem solving. The second part contains personality attributes and attitudes. This section has 42 questions. The largest agencies using the NCJOSI include the Detroit Police Department, Columbus and Dayton Police Departments, Corpus Christi and San Antonio Police Departments, and the Milwaukee Police Department.

Part 1 – Mathematics

Having basic math skills is essential to being a a law enforcement officer. This would include calculating the value of stolen property, determining the speed over the limit for a traffic ticket, and calculating distances. In this section of the exam the applicant will be tested on their proficiency with multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

Part 1 – Reading Comprehension

Law enforcement officers ready criminal statues, investigative reports, bulletins, and it is vital for the officer to have a clear, complete, and accurate understanding of what they read. In this section of the exam, the applicant will be tested on their ability to read information and understand what is contained.

Part 1 – Writing Ability

Law enforcement officers write reports and a variety of other documents. Being able to convey information clearly using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation is key. In this section applicants are tested on their writing ability.

Part 1 – Problem Solving

Law enforcement officers are constantly evaluating situations, determining what are the important elements, and then formulating a plan on how to address and resolve the situation. This can include problem solving routine situations to facing life threatening events. In this section of the exam, applicants will be tested on their ability to problem solve.

Part 2 – Personality Attributes

Unlike the sections in part 1, there are no correct or incorrect answers in the Personality Attributes section. Here applicants are presented with a series of statements and they mark which statement most accurately matches their opinion. There is a 5-point scale for selecting a response ranging from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree.” This section of the exam is scored based upon comparing how the applicant responded to those of successful law enforcement officers.
