Law Enforcement Firearms
Firearms used on the job will be issued by the department. Law Enforcement Firearms will usually include a handgun, often a semi-automatic. Officers will be issued their individual weapon which they are responsible for and in many departments will be able to take home this weapon when they are off duty.
Popular handguns used by police departments include the Glock, Smith & Wesson, and the Sig Sauer. Each department will determine what the standard issue handgun will be. Taken into consideration are the dependability, reliability, and the cost.
Depending upon the assignment of the officer there may be other weapons available to use while on duty. A patrol officer may have a shotgun available that is kept in their patrol car. Special assignments may require the use of specialized weapons. Tactical teams often use sub-machine guns, sniper rifles, and assault rifles.
