Community Outreach and Support Team (COAST) Programs:
Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL): UMB police and security officers collaborate with the UMB Community Engagement Center to offer free after-school mentoring for local youth. Participants in the PAL program help build community relations with officers, gaining insights into community service. Activities include homework help, games, field trips, and overnight conferences.
Co-Responder Model: Our officers encounter individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health crises, and other vulnerable situations while patrolling. Officers are able to provide or direct community members to resources that specialize in crisis intervention, aid, and assistance.
Comfort K9 Program: UMB was the third university police department in the nation to implement a comfort dog program, providing emotional support to our community.
Safety Awareness Officers: Our officers evaluate various locations on campus to identify potential safety or security concerns and recommend solutions.
Compensation Package:
Salary Range: $59,500.00 – $70,726.80
Important: Newly hired lateral officers during the effective period of the MOU Agreement will be placed at the appropriate step on the Police Pay Scale in the MOU based on experience and education, as determined by the University).
Officers newly hired during the effective period of this Agreement will be placed at the appropriate step on the Police Pay Scale in the MOU based on experience and education, as determined by the University. If that step is below $70,000.00 per year, the Officer will receive a retention payment in the amount of the difference between their current salary step on the Police Pay Scale in the MOU and $70,000.00, paid bi-weekly over the remaining time of this Agreement.
Lateral officers hired during the effective period of the MOU Agreement will receive a one-time certification bonus in the amount of $10,000.00 upon successful completion of academy.

As a University Police Officer II, you will play a crucial role in maintaining safety on our bustling campus. Our full-service police department operates 24/7, ensuring the well-being of our community. You will have full police authority as commissioned by the Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) and will work closely with our dedicated non-sworn security force and professional staff. Whether it is foot patrol, bike patrol, or responding to calls, you will be on the front lines, making a real impact.

Job Requirements
Primary Duties:
- Patrols designated areas by vehicle and foot to identify and report safety hazards, detect violations of laws and ordinances, and identify wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions. Maintains a visible presence to deter crime.
- Responds to calls for emergency service, evaluates the situation and determines appropriate course of action. Performs crowd control; responds to emergency situations; administers emergency medical aid.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements; collects, preserves, and processes evidence.
- Conducts surveillance and serves warrants and summonses. Performs searches and detains suspicious vehicles and persons. Arrests, searches, restrains, transports, guards, and processes violators.
- Interacts with campus community and establishes rapport with public.
- Mediates disputes and provides advice on legal rights and processes. Performs crisis mediation with persons involved in domestic and civil disputes, suicide, or hostage situations.
- Operates a variety of communication equipment to obtain, report, and verify information. Prepares and completes a variety of detailed reports and forms to support investigations.
- Prepares cases; appears and testifies in court.
- Enforces laws, ordinances, and institutional regulations.
- Directs traffic, investigates accidents, determines cause, and takes appropriate action.
- Inspects and maintains assigned equipment including firearms and clothing. Operates and utilizes various types of law enforcement equipment such as firearms and other self-defense tools and criminal detection devices.
- Assists in the training and directs the activities of law enforcement and other support personnel.
- Participates as instructed in specialized unit activities such as: crime prevention, recertification instruction, criminal investigations, or special events.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Experience: Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission recognized or approved Police Academy Training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. MPTC Certification
- Other: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission and valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
Policy Academy Requirements:
- At least 21 years old
- U.S. Citizen
- Vision: 20/100 (correctable to 20/30) with corrective lenses
- No felony convictions
- Physically capable
- Availability for weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on-call
- Valid Driver’s License
