Sergeant
Position Summary:
Responsible for assuring the safety, protection and assistance of students, staff, faculty, and visitors to the University. The Night Shift Sergeant has direct supervisory responsibility for full time and part time officers and student workers with primary responsibilities during 2nd and 3rd shifts and including weekends (likely designated work hours 8 p.m. – 5 a.m., Friday – Tuesday). This position also will frequently serve as the first supervisory staff member on scene for campus emergencies and crisis situations and as such must effectively communicate with Saint Leo community members including leadership and city and county emergency response.
Essential Functions:
- Leadership and supervision of Patrol Officers, Dispatch, Event Staff, and Student Employees primarily during 2nd and 3rd shifts and including weekends (likely designated work hours 8 p.m. – 5 a.m., Friday – Tuesday).
- Effective, engaging communication with students and their families, consistently modeling excellent customer service, appreciation for diversity, respect, compassion, and integrity.
- Emergency and crisis response including serving as liaison to other departments and campus leadership and working closely with EMS, Dade City Police, Pasco County Sherriff’s Office deputies, fire rescue and others.
- Effective assess, respond and facilitate situations that occur that impact Saint Leo community members and guests which include interpersonal situations, investigations, violations of policy, crimes, events, crisis, natural disasters, etc.
- Work effectively with Safety technology including access control, cameras, license plate reader, databases, etc.
- Assist with University Center safety concerns, training, security equipment, and online student/employee safety related concerns, etc.
- Performance evaluations, coaching/mentoring/training, disciplinary actions, approval of hours worked, scheduling, review and approval of daily dispatch logs.
- Assist with fleet maintenance and coordination through ensuring vehicles are safe, clean, and ready for use; properly checked in and out; van certification tests, etc.
- Assist with student transportation coordination or needs including airport shuttle, daily shuttle, safe ride golf cart, rides for people with temporary or permanent disabilities, quarantine transportation, etc.
- Coordinate and assist with facility locking and unlocking, residence hall rounds, patrol, and events including Commencement, Athletic Events and any other club or organization events on Campus.
- Other duties as assigned related to the daily operations of University Safety and the University.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited college or university.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Previous security, law enforcement, or military experience.
- Must be capable of walking long distances, and climbing flights of stairs.
- Must be able to do shift work.
