Position Summary:

Xavier University of Louisiana is accepting applications for the open position of Sergeant. A University Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising daily operations for a particular shift, specialized unit and overtime detail. This position supervises Officers, Corporals, specialized unit staff, and event staff in their daily operations; schedules staff and makes assignments; is the first line supervisor for all patrol functions; evaluates performance, provides feedback, constructive criticism, coaching, and discipline as needed. Must conduct and oversee all aspects of police duties and responsibilities, including criminal investigation, processing evidence, interviewing witnesses and making arrests. AA/EOE

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise Officers and Corporals on an assigned shift;
  • Coordinate with incoming supervisor regarding relevant occurrences during the previous shift; directing, supervising, assigning, reviewing, and participating in the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement; assist officers on major calls or complex situations where direction or assistance is required;
  • Oversee criminal investigations, including witness interviews and apprehension; review and edit officer reports and documentation; ensure that all reports are filed accurately and on time;
  • Conduct regular inspections of officer equipment and uniforms;
  • Review officer performance, complete probationary and annual performance evaluations;
  • Performs other assignments as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Five to seven years of experience in law enforcement, with two years of experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a university setting. CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must maintain a valid Louisiana driver’s license and residential/cellular phone on file with the Xavier University Police Department.
  • Some college education required.
  • Should be proficient in using multiple computer software programs designed to prepare reports and other documents relative to the position (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
  • Must possess Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification and have exemplary background and integrity as well as a history of ethical decision-making.
  • Must be in possession of a valid state motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Must pass a comprehensive criminal background investigation; must have and maintain a clean motor vehicle driving record.
  • Must be able to walk, run, stand for long periods of time and climb stairs, be able to stoop, bend, and lift over 80 pounds. Some overtime required. Considered “essential personnel” for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Associate degree preferred.
