Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee
Salary: $40,000 starting.
Position Summary:
The Mercer County Emergency Services Department is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee. Essential Functions:
- Answer and respond to 9-1-1 emergency calls for service, dispatching appropriate fire and EMS units.
- Operate and monitor radio channels to communicate with emergency personnel.
- Use computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software and 9-1-1 phone software to process and manage calls.
- Ensure the accurate and timely dispatch of emergency units, prioritizing based on urgency.
- Maintain clear and effective communication under pressure, multi-tasking between phone, radio, and computer systems.
Requirements:
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to type and communicate on the phone or radio simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, including handling distractions and stressful situations.
- Must be willing to work all shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional mandatory overtime.
- Required to successfully complete training and obtain certification by the NJ Office of Emergency Telecommunications Services (OETS) for NJ Basic Public Safety Telecommunicator and NJ Emergency Medical Dispatcher as a condition of continued employment. Training classes will be provided.
- Appointees who successfully complete the 12-month training period will be eligible for advancement under Civil Service Commission procedures to the title of Public Safety Telecommunicator 1.
