Position Summary:

Under general supervision, receives, evaluates, and processes emergency and non-emergency calls for Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS Departments; answers inquiries for information from general public as well as other criminal and non-criminal justice agencies; dispatches patrol, fire, and EMS units; maintains, types, and files various records and documents; interacts with the general public, criminal, and non-criminal justice agencies in person and via telephone.

Employees in this classification typically have more responsibility and may act with limited supervision and be required to make decisions without the ability to immediately consult a supervisor.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assists in training new employees and providing orientation on communications center policies and procedures.
  2. Responds to radio calls from law enforcement and emergency personnel in the field; acts as backup communication for other emergency service agencies and dispatch centers.
  3. Performs record searches from local databases and those maintained by the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS), and the Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) for warrant and criminal history status on field suspects and in-custody detainees.
  4. Confirms active warrants and transportation requirements for other law enforcement agencies; verifies and disseminates information received by Criminal Justice Agencies to field officers; gathers and translates information from field officers for efficient queries into the computer database systems.
  5. Receives 911 communications for assistance from landline and cellular phones from various locations within the local area as well as neighboring counties.
  6. Dispatches emergency units and relays pertinent information between field officers and emergency response units; provides emergency medical instruction using approved protocols.
  7. Communicates effectively with distraught, angry, hysterical, or frightened callers; maintains calm in emergency situations; handles stress-related to various emergency calls; dispatches appropriate units for calls.
  8. Maintains a written log of all radio and phone calls received and transmitted.
  9. Operates audio logging equipment for all radio and phone calls received and transmitted; maintains local databases by entering calls for requests for services or officer-initiated activity; enters and maintains local house watch list and emergency contact information in local databases; prints all pertinent daily and monthly reports.
  10. Operates and monitors facility video monitoring equipment.
  11. Operates and monitors facility door systems.
  12. Monitors employees within the Detention Facility through live video monitors or visual monitoring windows.
  13. Monitors inmates, when necessary, within the Detention Facility through live video monitors or visual monitoring windows.
  14. Performs daily maintenance on equipment and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment as necessary.
  15. Performs general cleaning of the work.
  16. Performs other duties as required by the Sheriff.

Requirements:

  • Within 90 days of employment, obtain and maintain certification to operate NCIC, NCJIS, and related computer systems at an Entry Level Certification.
  • Within 6 months of employment, obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch certification as required by the agency.
  • Within 18 months of employment, obtain Nevada POST Dispatch Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada driver’s license.
  • Completion of High School or General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
  • Experience which demonstrated the ability to interact positively with the public and/or internal or external customers.
