Advertised salary range includes approx. 17.5% of Incentive Pay. Employees may be eligible for incentive pay as follows:
Education Incentive Pay:
POST Intermediate Certificate: 2.5% of base salary
and/or
POST Advanced Certificate: 2.5% of base salary
and/or
Completion of 60 college semester units or AA/AS degree: 2.5%
and/or
Completion of 120 college semester units or BA/BS degree: 2.5%
Bilingual Pay: 2.5% of base salary
If assigned by Chief, Investigators receive 5% of base salary
Future Salary Increases:
3.5% effective July 1, 2024
Additional Incentive Pay:
Physical Fitness Program: $70-$120 per month
Uniform Allowance: $1200 per Fiscal Year
Higher vacation accrual for prior sworn, full-time peace officer experience from other qualifying agencies.
THE POSITION: As potential Police Sergeants, candidates in these roles will shoulder significant responsibility overseeing law enforcement and patrol duties during designated shifts. Responsibilities extend beyond field supervision, including the enforcement of departmental rules, fostering discipline, resolving subordinate issues, and conducting team performance evaluations. This role requires collaboration with armed personnel, possibly in uniform or plain clothes, requiring a balance of field and office tasks. Regular public engagement, often in high-stress situations, is a key element, necessitating strong interpersonal skills and emotional resilience. Adaptability to rotational scheduling and a variety of role assignments underlines the need for flexibility and versatility.
SELECTION PROCESS: Apply immediately. Applications will be reviewed and screened, and the most qualified candidates will be sent an invite to submit further documents and complete Personal History Statement.
EXAM PROCESS: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience will be invited to participate in a written exam, presentation, and oral board process.
Failure of any component during the exam process eliminates the candidate from further selection processing.
EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING: Appointees are required to complete a field training program and complete an eighteen (18) month probationary period.
START DATE: Upon decision of Police Chief.

Ideal Candidate
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES & CAPABILITIES:
A deep understanding of modern police methods and procedures is necessary, encompassing areas such as patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification techniques. Familiarity with standard radio broadcasting procedures, police records, and report creation, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of criminal law, including apprehension, arrest, and custody procedures, is expected.
Required abilities include the capacity to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of team members. The ability to efficiently gather, assess, and utilize facts and evidence, and adeptly analyze situations to determine effective responses is key. Skills should extend to the interpretation and application of laws and regulations, with sharp observational and memory capabilities. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are vital, along with the capacity to create clear, concise, and comprehensive reports, as well as guide others in doing the same.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.
Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by college level courses in Police Science.
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years Police Officer experience with the last three (3) years of continuous employment performing law enforcement peace officer duties.
Other Requirements:
Possession of a P.O.S.T Basic Certificate is required; a P.O.S.T Intermediate Certificate is desirable.
Must successfully complete an background investigation as a condition of initial employment with Dixon Police Department.
A valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
Spanish speaking ability desirable but not required.
