DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, attends a Basic Police Academy as approved by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST); upon successful completion of the Academy’s course of study acquires State of California peace officer status; and in a non-sworn capacity performs related duties, as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the training classification for law enforcement in the City of Corona. This is an entry-level non-sworn classification and upon successful completion of the P.O.S.T. approved academy, a Police Officer Trainee may be appointed to the Police Officer classification.
During the first (6) months incumbent will be a full-time non-represented employee, once incumbent becomes sworn he/she will be transferred to Corona Police Officers Association (CPOA) MOU.

- Attends and participates in a comprehensive law enforcement training program for entry level Police Officers.
- Receives, learns, and understands instruction in basic criminal investigation procedures and techniques.
- Receives and participates in firearm training, classroom instruction in enforcement psychology, enforcement tactics, effective writing, and speaking.
- Learns radio operations and methods of traffic, riot, and crowd control.
- Participates in and trains for physical strength and agility.
- Observes and complies with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Learn basic functions, principles, and practices of law enforcement agencies.
- Learn police terminology and law enforcement codes.
- Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
- Learn and understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
- The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
Ability to:
- Learn basic functions, principles, and practices of law enforcement agencies.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- Must be 20.5 years of age at time of application.
- Must have the ability to successfully complete a Basic Police Academy as approved by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
TESTING PROCESS:
THE CITY OF CORONA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR NEW SINGLE DAY TESTING PROCESS!
SAVE THE DATE: JANUARY 28, 2023
Pre-Test Day Informational Meeting: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the informational meeting which will inform candidates of the single day testing process, background process, and answer any questions. Candidates are highly encouraged to attend this meeting as valuable information in regards to the Department, the hiring process and the background is reviewed. The next informational meeting is scheduled for January 25, 2023.
Physical Agility, Written and Oral Board Interview: Candidates will then be invited to our single day testing process. The day will start with the physical agility testing which will require candidates to complete the following: climbing of 6ft. wall (chain link and solid), 25 push-ups in one minute, 30 sit-ups in one minute and complete 1.5 mile run in 13:30. The applicant must successfully complete each event in order to pass the physical agility.
Those who pass the physical agility testing, will be immediately invited to the written examination. Please note, the written examination given is NOT THE POST PELLET B EXAM. This is our own examination. We do not accept T-Scores and candidates must take and score high enough on our examination in order to continue on to the oral board interview which will take place the same day. Written examinations will be scored on site and those who pass and score high enough will be provided an oral interview time to participate in, on the same day.
The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list and the contacted by the department to start the background process as vacancies arise. The first single day testing process is scheduled for Saturday, January 28, 2023.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work primarily in a patrol and field environment and to maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects; vision to operate vehicles in all conditions, frequently at a high rate of speed, to maintain firearms qualification and to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking or running or standing on uneven terrain, and climbing and descending structures to access crime scenes and to identify problems or hazards; vision and manual dexterity to operate an emergency response vehicle at high rates of speed in emergency situations. Finger and manual dexterity are needed to operate police services equipment and firearms, and to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to apprehend, lift, carry, push, and pull victims, suspects and equipment as determined within P.O.S.T physical standards, which may include the use of proper equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employees work in outdoor conditions, and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, moving vehicles, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees also work in an office or station environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. The principal duties of this class are performed in a field or police station environment with exposure to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals, and persons potentially infected with communicable diseases.
WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to be on-call and to work various shifts or emergencies on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
