Up to $31.74 an hour – depending on qualifications and prior sworn law enforcement experience
Job Description
Chesapeake Part-Time Police Officers shall be considered Level One officers, as defined by DCJS.
- Part-Time Officer will be limited to the duties and tasks related to their specific assignment as directed by their chain of command.
- LiveScan misdemeanor processing of subjects for the courts, performing Campus security for the Municipal Center complex.
- Assignments and hours worked can change at direction of the Chief of Police and/or designee.
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma or GED and successful completion of the Chesapeake Police Academy, another acceptable Police Academy, or comparable training.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This job classification provides service to the community on a 24-hour basis. In order to accommodate the 24-hour service, this job classification is required to work rotating schedules, which include working weekends and holidays, and may involve work in excess of regularly scheduled hours when required by operational necessity. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Only current Virginia DCJS certified law enforcement officers or Virginia DCJS certified law enforcement officers who have retired within 24 months of a vacancy announcement will be permitted to apply for a Part-Time Police Officer position.
Retired and resigned Chesapeake Police Officers, in good standing, will be given preference in the selection process based on their knowledge and experience with the Chesapeake Police Department, other City Departments, and the City of Chesapeake, in general.
