Police Officer – Lateral Class
Salary: $62,676 – $98,036.
Position Summary:
A Police Officer Candidate receives comprehensive training through a six (6) month recruit training program. The work of a Police Officer involves considerable personal risk and requires the use of sound, independent judgment in emergency situations. The tactful, conscientious performance of duties is carried out with limited supervision. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, patrolling a designated area in the county to preserve the peace and to prevent and discover the commission of crime, directing traffic at pedestrian crossings and street intersections, enforcing motor vehicle operating and parking regulations, and performing communication functions. A Police Officer is also required to conduct preliminary investigations at the scene of a crime, administer first aid, gather evidence, obtain witnesses, make arrests, and testify as a witness in court. Employees work varying shifts and may be called upon to work irregular hours. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications will be scheduled for a written examination. Applicants will be notified of the test date and time via email prior to the test date. Applicants will also be provided information to complete a background investigation booklet which must be filled out COMPLETELY and hand delivered along with required documents. Candidates must also successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, polygraph examination, physical exam psychological examination including a physical ability component, drug and alcohol screen in order to receive a final offer of employment.
Requirements:
- No previous experience in law enforcement is required.
- Satisfactory completion of an Associate of Arts Degree or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of active duty military service with an honorable discharge or three (3) years of full time law enforcement officer experience recognized by MCPD; i.e., work as a sworn, government agent with full arrest powers eligible for rehire (Recognized) may be substituted for education.
- Be a U. S. citizen or a permanent legal resident of the United states and an honorably discharge veteran of the United States Armed forces who has applied to obtain United states citizenship and the application is still pending approval; and not less than twenty-one (21) years old as of the anticipated first day of employment as a sworn Police Officer.
- Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence. MD class C license is equivalent to other state’s that permit one to drive a car.
