Position Summary:

Police Officer is a non-exempt law enforcement officer position.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols assigned areas of City and enforces state and federal laws and City ordinances; patrols and examines buildings and residences to detect suspicious conditions and handles situations accordingly.
  • Directs traffic in congested and emergency areas; reports safety hazards; responds to scene of accidents, administers first aid, investigates cases and files accident reports; issues citations to violators of traffic laws/ordinances.
  • Visits the scene of crimes; searches for and preserves evidence, investigates and interviews victims, witnesses and potential suspects, apprehends those suspected of crimes, makes oral and written reports, provides testimony in court.
  • Speaks before citizens and citizen’s groups, participates in various training sessions as assigned and/or required by law.
  • Supports lawful decisions and enforces the policies and procedures as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Attends job related meetings, schools and seminars as required.
  • Must have knowledge of and meet minimum standards pertaining to firearms safety and qualifications.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States.
  • Ability to read, understand and communicate fluently in the English language.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must be able to pass a physical agility test. (non-certified applicants only)
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation and polygraph test.
  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be able to pass the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System’s medical standards and become CLEET certified.
  • Must submit to a psychological evaluation and be deemed suitable for the position.
  • Must be able to qualify on assigned weapons.
  • Although this is an entry level position, the incumbent must complete 12 months as a probationary officer in completing both written and knowledge requirements and field experience under direct supervision of a field training officer.
  • Must possess an Oklahoma Driver license and have a sufficient driving record for the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must have a high school education or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate two-way radio, walkie-talkie in field situations and to operate effectively radar equipment and to monitor and perform routine preventative maintenance on vehicle.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret ordinances, laws and other operation procedures and communicate orally and in writing; ability to investigate crimes and type reports.
  • Knowledge of the computer and ability to prepare, type and enter reports on the department reporting system.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public using tact and diplomacy and remain calm in emergency situations; provide constitutional requirements and perform first aid and/or CPR.
  • Ability to make split second decisions that could affect the well being of the public, department, fellow employees, as well as the officer’s safety. Ability to interact with other law enforcement personnel and safety personnel and protocol.
  • Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Must be able to respond to varying situations with tact and diplomacy and know how to deal with stressful, hostile or irrational persons, whether due to physical or mental disability, drugs, socio-economic differences, or other factors.
  • Upon employment, must reside within fifteen minutes response time of the city limits of Woodward.
  • Must have knowledge of and meet minimum standards pertaining to firearms safety and qualifications.
  • Must complete the minimum state standards annually for continuing education and mental health.
