Position Summary:

The Police Officer is responsible for the quality of his reports and other legal documentation. The Master Police Officer is responsible for all campus buildings and properties after hours working in coordination with the Building Security officers to ensure campus safety.

The Master Police Officer is an expert-level officer who fulfills responsibilities with full autonomy and independence. Provides mentorship and other leadership to other officers. Provides advice and counsel to upline authority. Assumes supervisory responsibilities in absence of Sergeant.

Essential Functions:

  • Protect life and property by patrolling campus on foot, bicycle, and patrol vehicles
  • Enforce Utah State statutes, Provo City ordinances, and campus regulations
  • Respond to alarms, medical emergencies, campus hazards, and disasters
  • Investigate traffic accidents and assist with stranded motorists
  • Respond to all service calls, including criminal investigations and active shooter incidents
  • Work in all weather conditions and hazardous situations
  • Provide leadership in specialty areas (e.g., Investigations, SWAT, Bike Team, Hostage Negotiation)
  • Act as a lead officer and maintain a positive attitude while following the chain of command
  • Write clear and comprehensive reports and notify supervisors as required
  • Develop positive relationships with students, faculty, the public, and law enforcement agencies
  • Promote crime prevention, awareness, and safety education
  • Supervise shift activities and ensure adherence to policies when the sergeant is off duty
  • Conduct arrests, issue citations, and testify in court when required
  • Investigate crimes and suspicious activities, referring follow-ups to detectives
  • Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements
  • Provide security for major events, including Stadium of Fire, home football games, and men’s basketball games
  • Work other special events such as performing arts, sports, conferences, and youth activities

Requirements:

  • High School graduate or complete GED program
  • 21 years of age or older
  • US citizen
  • Utah POST Category 1 certification, required (per state statute 53-6-203) OR actively enrolled in an academy program to obtain POST certification
  • Maintain Utah Peace Officer Standards and training requirements each year
  • Completion of BYU Police Department Field Training Officer (FTO) Program
  • Not currently on any form of supplemental probation for disciplinary actions
  • 9 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency

Preferred Requirements:

  • 1 year be at BYU
  • College degree or similar educational experience.
  • Prior law enforcement experience preferred.
