Position Summary:
Performs responsible protective service work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order. Incumbent works under general supervision of the assigned Police Sergeant.
Essential Functions:
- Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; assist rescue and fire personnel at routine calls
- Enforces City ordinances, State and Federal statutes, and traffics laws
- Investigate traffic accidents
- Serves warrants and makes arrest
- Conduct preliminary investigations on criminal offenses
- Testifies in court
- Provides police escorts and directs traffic at civic functions, roadway hazards, etc.
- Performs routine preventive patrol at residential and business areas
- Complete booking forms, photograph, and relevant paperwork on all subjects arrested.
- Performs property and evidence duties
- Make recommendations to citizens regarding home security, child safety, neighborhood watches
- Operates firearms, radio, communication equipment, police vehicle, radar, drug test kit, computer, fingerprinting and emergency equipment
- Maintain law enforcement equipment
- Performs emergency first aid
- Performs all other job related duties and tasks as assigned by the Chief of Police or appropriate supervisor.
Requirements:
- Must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a GED.

Must be a minimum age of 21 years old.

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Must have NO felony convictions.

Must be able to meet the minimum standards as established by Alabama State Law for law enforcement officers.

If applicant has been a member of the armed forces of the United States, the discharge must be under honorable conditions.

Must have valid driver’s license and driving record suitable for insurability.

Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the position.

Willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.

Willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops as required.

Must satisfactorily complete APOST-approved police academy within one (1) year from date of employment.
