Position Summary:

In surveying the grounds of what is now Wittenberg University, the Rev. Ezra Keller, the college’s first president and founder, remarked: “This is a lovely spot for a literary institution.” Today, that lovely spot encompasses more than 100 acres of rolling hills and hollows in southwestern Ohio, with architecturally distinctive structures that embrace Wittenberg’s past and provide a beautiful backdrop to the teaching excellence and Lutheran-affiliated learning environment that has defined Wittenberg University since its founding in 1845. Nationally recognized for accessible professors, engaging classroom experiences, service opportunities, and valued athletics traditions, Wittenberg is home to 1,200 students, 30 majors, 3 graduate programs, a wealth of pre-professional and cooperative programs, and 25 varsity sports.

Essential Functions:

  • Using courtesy and tact to encourage voluntary obedience of laws, ordinances and other university district needs.
  • Building and maintaining community policing relationships with the Wittenberg community along with participating in student engagement activities.
  • Enforcing federal and state laws, city ordinances and all other pertinent university and local regulations with regard to the rights of the individual concerned.
  • Maintaining high visibility; responding immediately to university district police/security incidents. Duties are to be carried out with prudent regard for the reasonable safety of all persons, specifically including the officer.
  • Utilizing appropriate and lawful means to prevent or halt the commission of an offense and to prevent escape of, or to apprehend, a suspect or offender when it is reasonable to do so.
  • Operating and maintaining vehicles.
  • Maintaining proficiency through training and education.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Applicants for this position must have successfully completed Ohio Peace Officer (OPOTA) basic training requirements and the peace officer certification examination
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older
  • A valid driver’s license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver’s license within 30 days of hire date.
  • Applicants must be able to pass the following tests/screenings: drug screen, psychological fitness, and background records check.
