Salary: $46,976.31 – $49,354.40 Annually

Position Summary:

Performs protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments which are often performed under emergency conditions and frequently involve considerable personal hazard, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Police Sergeant and Police Lieutenant.

Essential Functions:

  • On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe for violations of City, county or state laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
  • Serves warrants and makes arrests; testifies in court.
  • Checks building security; responds to business and residential alarms.
  • Enforces ordinances concerning parking.
  • Operates police traffic radar for speed law enforcement.
  • Investigates traffic accidents; secures information and evidence; directs traffic and enforces traffic laws; conducts traffic surveys and checks; assists stranded and locked out motorists.
  • Provides police escorts for funerals, bank deposits and special events; transports arrestees, involuntary commitment patients and victims of domestic violence to appropriate facility.
  • Conducts and assists with criminal investigations by preserving evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, performing property and evidence duties.
  • Prepares detailed incident, accident and arrest reports.
  • Ensures equipment is operational; performs or ensures appropriate maintenance is done on equipment.
  • Prepares and presents education programs for the public.
  • Provides first responder support including first aid and CPR as qualified; assists fire and emergency services with traffic control.
  • May be assigned specific collateral duties such as administrative, special response team, special operations, telecommunications, instructor, honor guard, etc.
  • Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates.
  • Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of NC Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire firearms, radar, intoximeter, Division of Criminal Information Terminal
  • Operator and other certifications depending on departmental assignment.
  • Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina.
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina
