Position Summary:
A Patrol Officer serves in an operational capacity under the direction of a Sergeant, with primary duties in responding to directed calls for service, proactively patrolling assigned areas, and crime prevention. These primary duties include, but are not limited to, preliminary criminal investigations, follow-up investigations, identifying and enforcing traffic code violations, traffic crash investigations, cooperating with other agencies, making arrests, appearing in court, writing reports, conducting or participating in training, public relations, and community outreach.
Essential Functions:
- Prepares necessary reports and documentation for investigations, arrests, or other incidents; gathers information through various sources; utilizes personal computing devices, mobile computers, and other electronic equipment to report, document, and exchange information.
- Prepares for and accurately testifies in court in order to present the facts surrounding any civil, criminal, or departmental action. Appears and testifies as a witness in official proceedings.
- Safely operates patrol vehicle during normal and adverse weather conditions at normal and high speeds, during daylight and darkness, and during emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Maintains and operates police electronic communication equipment, listens and responds to radio communications; observes and identifies suspects, vehicles/license plates and other objects from varied distances in various lighting or weather conditions.
- Maintains equipment in order to ensure efficient and dependable operation by servicing, cleaning, and polishing when necessary.
- Renders aid and secures crime, disaster, and accident scenes in order to preserve evidence and to protect persons and property by using techniques such as barricades, locked and guarded establishments, properly placed patrol car, red lights, fuses, flags, re-routed traffic, or use of additional personnel.
- Conducts interviews and/or interrogations of suspects, drivers, occupants, and other witnesses in order to obtain evidence, information, confessions, or admissions of criminal acts; provides Miranda warnings when applicable; properly documents information obtained during investigations.
- Properly collects contraband and/or evidence in order to seize illegal items or items of evidence in criminal and civil cases. Follows established search and seizure procedures. Enforces motor vehicle laws in order to promote safety, reduce accidents, and facilitate safe traffic flow on public highways; enforces state statutes and abides by our oath of office by observing, detecting, and apprehending violators of the laws using specialized equipment; utilizes approved enforcement methods and established procedures.
- Pursues suspects on foot over long distances, subdues and restrains combative persons, carries and discharges small and large firearms, traverses uneven and difficult terrain; lifts or carries incapacitated
persons or prisoners in varying terrain; physically subdues combative and/or belligerent persons, including armed felons; mediates domestics disputes and disperses crowds, breaks up fights, etc.; engages in hand-to-hand combat; renders general assistance to public safety personnel. - Participates in ongoing training and education.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Sworn personnel with the Crestwood Police Department must receive the proper Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification and maintain that certification while commissioned as a Police Officer with the City of Crestwood.
