Position Summary:

Incumbent is a sworn commissioned officer responsible for enforcement of tribal and applicable laws to protect life and property on a 24-hour on-call status. Incumbent enforces an assortment of laws, regulations, and ordinances relative to criminal, traffic, civil, and natural resources. Incumbent realizes work involves, at times, an element of personal danger during confrontations with violators, and requires exercise of independent judgment and discretion during emergencies. The incumbent is required to prepare reports, citations, statistical data and logs; appear in court; conduct investigations; make arrests; patrol within the boundaries of the Yakama Reservation; off reservation sites; in-lieu sites and ceded areas.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety organizational chart and established chain of command.
  • May provide technical assistance, as a training officer, to newly hired officers.
  • Patrol assigned areas within the exterior boundaries of the Yakama Reservation and ceded area by vehicle, foot, air or boat.
  • Patrol all areas of assignment within the exterior boundaries of the Yakama Reservation, and upon direction, the ceded area and wherever law enforcement services are required.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and/or a crime in progress; identifies; pursues; and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Investigate complaints and disturbances.
  • Evaluate complaints and emergency requests and determines response requirements. Takes action needed to secure a crime or accident scene; administers emergency first aid; conduct interviews of victims; witnesses; gathers evidence; and arrests suspects. Prepares written incident and arrest reports according.
  • Testifies as needed in court proceedings or administrative matters.
  • Completes and submits required incident reports, documents, daily and biweekly logs, and vehicle maintenance reports.
  • As assigned, performs conservation patrols; monitors treaty fishing and hunting activities relative to Yakama Nation self-regulation.

Requirements:

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Required to successfully pass a criminal background check; to meet federal standards S.F. 86.
  • Must have or immediately obtain minimum training requirements under Federal regulations. The Basic Police Training at the Indian Police Academy must be completed within 1 year of hire.
  • Must possess a basic first aid/CPR card or obtain within 6 months of hire; and keep current.
  • Must be in excellent physical condition, and capable of sustained, strenuous physical exertion as evidenced by annual medical examination and Physical Efficiency Battery testing.
  • Must have binocular vision correctable (Snellen) in each eye; near vision corrected or uncorrected must be sufficient to read Yeager type 11-14 inches.
  • Keyboarding/typing skill at a minimum of 35 words per minute (wpm).
  • Required to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.
  • Required to attend and successfully complete mandatory training.
  • Must understand the position and working conditions and consider the impact on personal lifestyle and family.
  • Required to wear departmental uniform.
  • Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
