Salary: $34.46 to $45.94 per hour.

Position Summary:

This service position performs law enforcement work such as routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic regulation for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Special assignments may be received which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge usually acquired through experience, training, or education.

If you are a student currently enrolled in the second year of an Associate’s degree or senior year of a Bachelor’s degree program, we encourage you to apply before graduation and obtaining Minnesota Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.
  • Patrol a designated area responding promptly to calls for service.
  • Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures.
  • Enforces city ordinances including but not limited to parking, public use of recreation areas, noise, social host, etc.
  • Respond and investigate traffic crashes.
  • Subdue and arrest individuals for commission of crimes and/or violations.
  • Serve warrants and subpoenas.
  • Execute search warrants.
  • Prepares clear, concise, and accurate reports and forms that document incidents and activities.
  • Mediate conflicts between individuals and groups.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of complaints of criminal acts.
  • Interview and/or interrogates suspects and witnesses.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations of crimes and incidents.
  • Gathers physical evidence and may present it with testimony at judicial proceedings.
  • Recover lost and stolen property.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid as needed.
  • Report matters of concern to the appropriate law enforcement agency and city department as needed.
  • Attends regular training for the proper use of firearms, taser, police vehicles, and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Engages in regular training to learn modern police methods and procedures including but not limited to de-escalation techniques and proper use of force for a variety of situations.
  • Engages in regular training to stay current with state laws and city ordinances.
  • Perform other duties as requested by their supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Associates Degree or equivalent training at a technical or vocational school with a focus on criminal justice or related field
  • Possess a driver’s license valid in the state of Minnesota
  • One (1) year of police experience desired
  • Possess a Minnesota Peace Officer license or be willing to obtain P.O.S.T. Certification before beginning employment.
  • Individuals who intend to obtain POST Certification by the Minnesota Police Officers Standards and Training Board (P.O.S.T.) by October 1, 2024 are encouraged to apply.
