Salary:

  • Non-Certified: $41,322.
  • Certified: $47,991.

Position Summary:

The Police Officer works under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant. Performs responsible protective service work in the Police Department. The work involves an element of personal danger.

Essential Functions:

  • On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle or walks to observe for various violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order.
  • Respond to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
  • Serve warrants and makes arrests.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Provides police escorts.
  • Directs traffic.
  • Observes traffic control measures and recommends improvements.
  • Performs special assignments.
  • Reports unsafe conditions existing in streets or other public facilities.
  • Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, preparing property and evidence duties, recording and issuing evidence in court cases.
  • Prepares detailed reports.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by application deadline.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in a Criminal Justice related field and Virginia Law Enforcement Officer Certification preferred.
  • Bilingual is a preferred skill.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass written tests, physical agility assessment, background investigation, physical examination and drug screen.
