Police Officer (2 positions available)
Position Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs general patrol and operational duties ensuring compliance with all applicable Federal and State Laws and University Policies; answers calls when a crime is suspected or an emergency exists; takes such actions as are necessary to prevent crime, to maintain safety, to assist the campus community in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations. The Central State University Police Department subscribes to the Community-Oriented Policing philosophy and, therefore, the primary emphasis of the position involves community service. Officers are required to take a problem-solving approach to the situations they encounter on a day-to-day basis and to interact with the campus community on a regular basis to address relevant concerns facing the campus community.
Essential Functions:
- Patrols campus buildings and property to maintain security and safety. Checks, locks and unlocks doors as necessary. Reports unsafe campus conditions.
- Directs and regulates traffic.
- Looks for and investigates conditions or situations which may indicate a crime is about to be, or has been, committed.
- Conducts investigations of crimes, preserves crime scenes, gathers and preserves evidence.
- Maintains records and prepares reports of incidents and activities. Takes statements from witnesses and suspects.
- Investigates accidents, determining conditions, causes and other pertinent facts regarding accidents.
- Issues citations for violations of traffic laws.
- Uses discretion to collaborate with Student Conduct authorities to provide disciplinary interventions for minor student infractions.
- Makes arrests, sometimes requiring the use of physical effort.
- Secures warrants. Testifies in court.
- Transports prisoners.
- Assists injured persons, providing appropriate notifications when necessary.
- Answers inquiries; assists stranded motorists.
- Ability to acquire and maintain certification (pursuant to state standards) for the operation of on-duty and off-duty firearms.
Requirements:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a State certified Peace Officer basic training program, or able to transfer an out of state certification.
- Minimum of 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s license, and must maintain the valid Ohio Driver’s license consistent with Central State University policy, and within the constraints provided by the University’s insurance carrier(s).
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Background must be free of felony convictions.
- Successful completion of all phases of the Selection Process, including but not limited to physical and psychological examinations.
