Position Summary:

Under general direction from a higher level police officer or administrator, and in accordance with broad operating procedures, performs a variety of duties and tasks related to providing safety and security to university buildings, grounds, and personnel by properly enforcing all applicable state and local laws, codes, and ordinances, as well as university policies, procedures, and regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols grounds and buildings on foot (and in a vehicle) to ensure public safety and the security of facilities by enforcing all appropriate codes, laws, and regulations, while maintaining a positive public relations image by assisting students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Maintain positive employee relations with department personnel, the university community, and external community members. 55%
  • Conducts investigations of criminal and accident incidents (following operating procedures) and completes appropriate administrative duties related to such activities. 15%
  • Apprehends, arrests, and processes criminal violators, files affidavits, serves warrants, appears in court and testifies (i.e., being able to present credible testimony in a court of law) in criminal proceedings according to department standards. Performs required safety and security functions at special Wright State University events to ensure public welfare and safely. 10%

  • Performs other special related duties such as emergency medical runs, assisting other law enforcement agencies in their duties and escorting, protecting, and assisting visitors as required (i.e., functions related to public safety and welfare). 5%
  • Performs routine administrative duties following department standards such as completion of logs, reports, telephone work, and general office work (as required) to assure proper functioning of the department. 5%
  • Monitors traffic conditions and parking facilities to ensure efficient traffic flow – performing all traffic functions as required, and other duties as assigned. 5%

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have the ability to gather and classify information, and be able to prepare clear and concise police reports.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and a current OPOTA certification or at time of appointment.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and an extensive background investigation.
  • May be required to undergo an annual physical examination and periodic psychological and/or psychiatric examination as needed.
  • A valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • A valid OPOTA Basic Peace Officer Training Certification.
