Position Summary:

Our Police Officers perform responsible general law enforcement work to protect life and property in the Town. They work as part of a dynamic and ambitious team of Town employees to maintain the quality of life in Boiling Springs. With the support of the Town’s leadership, employees are empowered to provide essential and important public services for our residents and visitors.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists the Police Chief with departmental supervisory and administrative work; researches, drafts, and recommends new and revised departmental policies and procedures; serves as Police Chief in his absence.
  • Supervises activities of the Patrol staff; analyzes trends and determines priorities and needed resources; makes assignments; provides operational advice; organizes work and staff in concert with departmental goals and objectives; ensures compliance to all departmental standards, rules and practices.
  • Supervises activities associated with criminal investigations activities of the department; reviews reports and case progress; provides advice and resources to further case completion; coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Reviews incident reports; coaches’ staff on shift problem-solving; observes field performance and provides feedback; reviews records and reports; investigates citizen concerns about department policy and performance.
  • Participates in hiring and promotional processes; conducts background investigations; provides coaching and counseling to subordinate staff; conducts internal investigations of employees, as required; ensures proper motivation, communications, training, and readiness of staff; fills in on patrol shifts and investigations, as needed.
  • Coordinates rookie and field training; works closely with the Training Officer for in-service training and recertification programs.
  • Takes calls from citizens regarding problems, complaints, requests, and questions; investigates concerns; meets and confers with citizens, department staff, Town management and others to identify proper response.
  • Provides input to the Chief in short and long-term planning and budget preparation, including development of goals and objectives and developing projections on budget needs and spending throughout the year.
  • Promotes the Department to the public through individual contact and representing the Chief at Town and regional meetings; serves on a variety of committees to represent the department.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a two or four-year degree in Criminal Justice or graduation from high school supplemented by basic courses in police science and considerable experience in law enforcement along with considerable supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license and have completed the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Council for certified law enforcement officers.
