Police Corporal
Salary: $6,605.67 – $7,282.85 Monthly
Position Summary:
Under general direction, performs and leads law enforcement work within the Police Department as a sworn peace officer authorized to carry firearms and protects life and property through the enforcement of laws, Board policies and administrative regulations; coordinates the follow-up of cases with appropriate law enforcement agencies and the collection of forensic evidence including, but not limited to, fingerprints and photographs; assists with the coordination and scheduling of department-wide training; performs special administrative projects; serves as the primary field training officer for Police Department employees ‘in training’; participates in regular police work; performs the full scope of Police Officer duties; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Performs and leads law enforcement work within the Police Department as a sworn peace officer authorized to carry firearms to protect life and property through the enforcement of laws, Board policies, and administrative regulations; ensures that appropriate police actions are taken to assist the public as required by law.
- Coordinates the follow-up of cases with appropriate law enforcement agencies and the collection of forensic evidence including, but not limited to, fingerprints and photographs; processes criminal case filings and works directly with the local police departments and the district attorney offices, and/or other law enforcement entities to support the prosecution of cases as appropriate.
- Assists with the coordination and scheduling of department training, including but not limited to firearms safety and Peace Officer Standards and Training(POST)continuing education; maintains training records and monitors expiration/renewal dates.
- Performs special administrative projects including, but not limited to, researching and surveying other agencies’ practices and use of equipment, and conducting cost-benefit analyses on implementing such practices.
- Serves as the primary field training officer for department employees ‘in training’; coordinates training officers monitoring of trainee progress and addresses trainee issues or deficiencies; verifies successful completion of POST training requirements.
- Maintains the department field training manual and recommends training procedures and schedules in accordance with POST requirements.
- Patrols property to discourage and apprehend lawbreakers, and to detect fire, safety, and/or health problems; provides physical security for buildings and other property.
- Regulates traffic and issues parking and traffic citations and warnings; may conduct preliminary review of parking citation appeals.
- Responds to calls or requests for police services including, but not limited to, accidents, emergencies, crimes, threats, and altercations; investigates unsafe conditions that may pose a hazard to the safety or health of employees and students; makes observations and takes appropriate action.
- Investigates reports of criminal activity, unsafe conditions, and violations of state and federal statutes and municipal codes, as well as Board policies and administrative regulations; gathers evidence; interviews, interrogates, and records statements from witnesses, suspects, and victims and identifies relevant facts; arrests and searches suspects in accordance with law enforcement statutes, codes and regulations; prepares investigative reports on incidents and cases for follow up and/or filing with appropriate law enforcement officials; testifies in court as required.
- Performs emergency first aid and stabilizes injured persons prior to the arrival of paramedics.
- Assists with the implementation of emergency plans, including but are not limited to following the Incident Command System (ICS), responding to emergencies, and training faculty, staff, and students on emergency procedures.
- Assists local police department(s), and district attorney offices, and other law enforcement agencies to support the prosecution of cases as appropriate.
- Provides appropriate service, including information and assistance, to the District community in a manner consistent with Board policies and administrative regulations.
- Safely operates an automobile, SUV, or truck to perform patrols, conduct observations, and respond to emergency situations and calls for service.
- Safely operates police weapons including but not limited to firearms, tasers, and batons.
- May assist with roll call briefings for officers and dispatchers.
- May assist with or conduct the background investigation for new Police Cadets.
- May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or Police Cadets.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience working as a full-time sworn Police Officer.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
- Must pass POST written, physical, psychological, and medical exams, as well as an extensive background investigation.
- Must possess a POST Regular Basic Police Academy certificate.
- Must possess a valid Class “C” or higher California driver’s license.
- Upon appointment to this classification, employees will be placed on a twelve-month period of probation as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
