Police Corporal
Position Summary:
Under general supervision from the Chief or Sergeant, the Police Corporal is an experienced police officer and shift supervisor who provides all aspects of general law enforcement services to the community. In addition to police officer duties, a Police Corporal may be assigned specialized police work including investigation of complex criminal cases, preparation and delivery of in-service training, coordinating efforts to address certain police problems, and will also serve as a supervisor in the absence of the Chief or Sergeant
Essential Functions:
- Follows established Charter Township of Chocolay (Township) policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information. Maintains MIOSHA standards and meets all other regulatory requirements, as applicable.
- Patrols a designated area of the Township in a radio equipped patrol car or a similarly equipped snowmobile. The officer reports to the scene of accidents, renders service including first aid, enforces traffic laws, directs and reroutes traffic as needed, conducts investigations into the cause of accidents and generally provides for the safety of the public.
- The Corporal responds to a variety of citizens’ complaints and violations of law while acting as the supervisor on scene. These complaints include, but are not limited to break-ins, robberies, vandalism, domestic disputes, and assaults. Performs preliminary criminal investigations through victim and witness interviews, collection of evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and prepares required documents and investigative reports.
- Follows up on preliminary investigation of routine complaints. Assist the Sergeant in the investigation of major cases, as directed. Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers as directed.
- Provides briefings and ensures the communication of information pertinent to the officers such as wanted persons, stolen vehicles, special property checks, and officer safety alerts, assigns calls waiting at start of shift and civil process and warrants to be served.
- Directly participates in animal control activities including investigation of complaints, pickup, and transfer of animals to the animal shelter.
- Assists with crime prevention, public education, and acts in collaboration with other community organizations.
- Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to investigation of crime and the apprehension of criminals.
- Patrols an assigned area for general purposes of crime prevention, security and law enforcement including patrols of buildings, parks, schools, and other public sites after hours.
- Preserves the peace at public gatherings, civil disturbances, neighborhood disputes and family quarrels utilizing the appropriate disbursement or diversion tactics.
- Follows orders in law enforcement situations as dictated by the Chief or his designee.
- Serves or delivers warrants, summons, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately.
- Provides information to and answers inquiries from the public.
- Serves as the responsible supervisor in the absence of a sergeant or other higher-ranking officers
- Remains alert to all nuisances, impediments, obstructions, defects, or other conditions that might endanger or hinder the safety, health, or convenience of the public within patrol area. Alerts supervisor as soon as situation permits.
- Conducts searches for lost persons, runaways, walkaways, and others as needed. Searches for persons for the purpose of delivery of emergency messages.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and College coursework in criminal justice, police science, law enforcement, public administration, or a closely related field. Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification. (MCOLES), LEIN.
- Minimum: 2 years’ experience with the Chocolay Township Police Department as an officer.
- Possession of a valid operator’s license as issued by the State of Michigan.
- Good driving record.
- Computer and/or keyboarding skills required.
- Excellent human relation and oral/written communication.
- Excellent organizational abilities.
- Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, department rules and regulations.
- Ability to operate equipment including squad car, police radio, snowmobile, firearms, tasers, pepper gas, AED’s, radar, surveillance equipment, Less-lethal bean bag weapon, breathalyzers, and first aid equipment as needed.
Preferred Requirements:
- Associate degree in criminal justice, police science, law enforcement, public administration, or a closely related field. Training as evidence technician, medical examiner investigator, LEIN.
- 5 years’ experience as Police Officer within any department.
