Position Summary:

The Youngstown Police Cadet is aimed at individuals considering a career in law enforcement with the Youngstown Police Department. Cadets will gain exposure to, and understanding of, police work performed at the Youngstown Police Department. Cadets will serve as non-sworn police auxiliary personnel and perform various police support related work under general supervision as part of the program. Work may be performed in a field setting under a full range of environmental conditions and /or traditional office setting. Cadet may work with and /or in close proximity to chemicals, blood and various controlled substances. Irregular work assignments and working on holidays and evenings may be required. Occasional exposure to weather conditions. This position in unclassified and exempt from the classified service for the City of Youngstown.

Essential Functions:

  • Interacts with the public and provides factual information about Agency procedures or services
  • Prepares routine reports and forms that do not require a sworn officer
  • Provides related assistance with crowd control, direct traffic at public events
  • Tags abandoned vehicles for impound
  • Participates and provides support for special projects and events
  • Performs minor maintenance at the police station as directed
  • Assists sworn Officers and Supervisors on a day to day basis with basic functions
  • Learns the police reporting system and dispatch system
  • Performs related duties as directed

Requirements:

  • Must be at least (19) years of age.
  • High School graduate with a diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must have a valid State of Ohio Drivers License.
  • Must be community and civic minded individual that demonstrates an interest in a career in Law Enforcement.
  • Must be able to successfully undergo a background investigation process which will include a complete criminal records check, a thorough background investigation, a truth verification exam, a psychological exam and a drug screen.
  • Cadets will be required to enter into an agreement with the City of Youngstown to repay Police Academy expenses in the event of employment separation within (3) years of full-time employment with the Youngstown Police Department (YPD)
