Salary: $24.78 – $29.15 Hourly.

Position Summary:

The primary objective of the position is to attend and successfully complete the Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training (ICPOET) Grant Cohort program and skills to obtain required Professional Peace Officer Education (PPOE.) After completion of the ICPOET Grant Cohort program, the cadet will take the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) licensing exam. Upon passage of the POST exam, the cadet will be eligible to be hired as a full-time police officer. The ICPOET Grant Cohort program will run from approximately October 2024 to March 2025.

Essential Functions:

  • Attend and successfully complete all classes required for the ICPOET Grant Cohort Program.
  • Complete and pass all required coursework and assignments.
  • When not scheduled to attend any required classes for the ICPOET Grant Cohort Program, will report to the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department office to perform tasks as assigned.
  • Assist the Public Safety Department in City events as assigned.
  • Participate in ride-alongs with sworn officers.
  • Enforce applicable ordinances and statutes pertaining to animals, animal control, parking, and selected health and nuisance ordinances.
  • Perform detention duties, including booking, searching, controlling and releasing prisoners.
  • Manage, inventory and order miscellaneous supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and thorough reports and other paperwork required by various job activities.
  • Draft minor police reports, such as criminal damage to property and theft as needed. When applicable, issue summons/citations regarding city code violations.
  • Assist Police Officers, support services and investigations with any additional operational duties.
  • Work with sworn staff to ensure they have a clean vehicle in proper working order for shift use.
  • Participate in departmental initiatives which foster positive interaction between the Public Safety Department and members of the community.
  • Assist in the recovery and inventorying of lost, abandoned and/or confiscated property.
  • Deliver vehicles in need of repair to the appropriate city shop or dealership for service.
  • Perform fingerprinting for applicant background investigations.
  • Provide traffic control or perimeter security as assigned.
  • Participate in and stay proficient on department recognized defensive tactics.
  • Provide good working habits and a willingness to cooperate with others and contribute in a positive way to a pleasant working climate.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
  • Possess good judgment and common sense.
  • Ability to pass a full background investigation, medical and psychological exam.
  • Possess a 2-year or 4-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Currently enrolled or able to apply to and be accepted into an approved two-year law enforcement program.
  • Must immediately start full-time college attendance (12 credit hours or four classes per semester or 18 credit hours or six classes per term) upon hire and maintain a 2.00 GPA (“C” average) or better.
  • Police Cadets must be able to safely perform all the tasks and responsibilities of the position and be fit and suitable for promotion to Police Officer.
  • Ability to meet the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Minimum Selection Standards.
  • Must be able to tolerate stress in a multitude of forms, such as taking enforcement action, dealing with anxious and emotional persons.
