Police Cadet
Salary: $17.33 – $20.30 Hourly
Position Summary:
The City of Montebello is seeking customer service-driven, motivated individuals interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to join the Police Department as a Police Cadet.
The philosophy of the Cadet program is to prepare the Cadet for future employment in law enforcement. To accomplish this goal and to give Cadets a broader perspective of police work, the Cadets will work on various assignments within the department.
This is a temporary, unclassified, part-time position. The position is exempt from Civil Service Rules and Regulations; therefore, Police Cadets may be discharged by the Chief of Police without a right of appeal.
Essential Functions:
- General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citations
- Performing traffic control
- Preparing reports for the impounding of vehicles
- Investigating and writing a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is present
- Collecting and preserving evidence
- Appearing and testifying in court
- Providing information and assistance to the public at the front counter
- Answering telephone requests for police services
- Collecting money for public requests or documents
- Performing clerical assignments and providing support for department personnel
- Processing reports and maintaining records and files
- Preparing misdemeanor cases for filing with the District Attorney
- Serving subpoenas
- Fingerprinting
- Performing routine jail functions such as custodial checks on inmates, searches, booking, fingerprinting, and other necessary jail duties
- Performing crossing guard duties
- Conducting tours of city facilities
- Maintaining police vehicles
- Performing other related duties as assigned
- Patrol city parks and enforce state and municipal laws
Requirements:
- No law enforcement experience is required; experience as a Police Explorer or equivalent is desirable.
- High school graduation, GED, or CHSPE equivalent.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (Accrediting organization must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) and carrying six or more units per semester, or nine or more units per quarter, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
If a Police Cadet, prior to reaching their 24th birthday, fails to be appointed as a Law Enforcement Recruit, or other position within the Police Department, that Police Cadet will be released from employment. Police Cadets who complete an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree may remain in the program until their 24th birthday. - Applicants, if selected and hired, must have the ability to successfully complete an 832PC Laws of Arrest course.
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 22 at the time of appointment.
- Applicant must possess a valid California driver’s license.
