Patrol Officer
Position Summary:
The Patrol Officer is responsible for protection of life and property, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances. Duties normally consist of routine patrol, preliminary investigation and traffic regulation. To provide a safe environment for citizens and visitors and to answer calls for service ranging from friendly assists to highly stressful and dangerous incidents:

Essential Functions:
- Identify and apprehend criminal offenders; participate in related court proceedings when appropriate.
- Prevent crime by conducting proactive patrols and implementing deterrent measures.
- Assist individuals in immediate physical danger.
- Uphold and protect constitutional rights.
- Promote the safe and orderly movement of people and vehicles.
- Provide assistance to individuals unable to care for themselves.
- Mediate and resolve conflicts.
- Recognize and respond to potential public safety or governmental concerns.
- Maintain and restore public order during disturbances or emergencies.
- Deliver emergency services as needed.
- Patrol assigned areas—by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot—to prevent crime and enforce laws.
- Duties include checking public assemblies, buildings, schools, parks, and playgrounds; interrogating suspicious individuals; issuing citations; identifying hazards; and reporting infrastructure issues.
- Respond to incidents observed during patrol or dispatched via radio. Provide first aid to injured or ill individuals and assist those in need, including the elderly, disabled, or lost.
- Provide information and guidance to the public; counsel individuals when necessary and refer them to appropriate services or agencies.
- Preserve peace during public events, neighborhood disputes, and domestic disturbances.
- Prepare detailed reports on crimes, accidents, arrests, and investigations; gather statements from witnesses, suspects, and complainants; and coordinate with relevant departments and agencies
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Successful completion of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement Training Program is required.
- Must possess a valid Maine motor vehicle operator’s license.
- In-depth knowledge of modern policing principles, standards, and practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of patrol operations, traffic control, criminal investigations, and crime prevention strategies.
- Working knowledge of first aid practices and techniques.
- Proficient in the use, operation, and care of police equipment, including firearms.
- Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances related to public safety.
