Patrol Deputy
Salary: $45,000.00
Position Summary:
The “Uniform Patrol Deputy” is responsible for the performance of a variety of law enforcement duties including the prevention of crime, keeping the peace, arresting violators and more during an assigned 12-hour work shift throughout Lafourche Parish.
Essential Functions:
- Proficient with Central Square (digital records management system) and all databases utilized by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office;
- Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violators and deter criminal activity;
- Familiarize self with assigned patrol area to gain knowledge concerning the persons residing within the area, the geographical layout and system of highways, roads, and alleyways, the location and types of businesses and normal hours of operation, and the location of emergency services/facilities such as telephones, fire hydrants, etc.;
- Drive patrol vehicle throughout assigned area observing traffic violations and issuing citations;
- Assume control at traffic accidents to maintain traffic flow, assist accident victims, and investigate causes of accidents; investigate non-life threating accidents on parish roads;
- Investigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons, quell disturbances, and arrest law violators;
- Locate and take persons into custody on arrest warrants;
- Operate radio to receive instructions and notify superiors of work efforts in progress;
- Complete detailed reports regarding all crimes, vehicular accidents and other incidents where a response by the deputy has occurred; to include arrest reports, citations, etc.;
- Preserve and protect crime scenes until superiors and investigators arrive;
- Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean condition;
- Collect, secure, document and properly transports all evidence to assigned location;
- Promptly and accurately serve and/or deliver warrants and other official papers, as instructed;
- Conduct security checks of property;
- Observe and question suspicious persons and complete field interview worksheet for intelligence gathering purposes;
- Report malfunctions in streetlights and traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, and any other conditions detrimental to overall public safety;
- Direct traffic during peak congestion periods;
- Assist general public on as-needed basis, which include providing roadside assistance.
Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from a university or college; or, six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License;
- P.O.S.T. Certification Required;
- Must possess basic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services; and, possess basic skills in the operation of personal computers, typewriters, calculators, copy machines, and fax machines; basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required;
- Must have the emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals, inmates, and criminal suspects and perpetrators;
- Must possess the ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations;
- Must have the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office;
- Must be able to work on 12-hour rotating shifts.
