Position Summary:

The Patrol Deputy performs skilled work to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Williams County. This position performs various law enforcement duties, such as patrolling assigned areas, enforcing laws, apprehending and interviewing violators, and responding to calls for assistance.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides safety and security to citizens in the community through law enforcement, patrol, civil process service, investigations, and other duties on an assigned shift
  • Patrols assigned areas, looking for illegal, hazardous, and suspicious activities and persons; provides backup assistance, scene security, and protection for regional emergency services personnel
  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws and enforces local regulations and ordinances according to policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Conducts traffic stops and investigates traffic accidents; assists victims and witnesses and investigates incidents as required; reports hazardous conditions and safety concerns
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; interrogates and communicates with victims, witnesses, and suspects in cases; secures and documents crime scenes and property; identifies and collects evidence; takes criminal complaints from citizens
  • Arrests law violators; locates, pursues, and arrests criminal suspects; transports and processes prisoners and special custody cases; testifies in court; serves arrest and search warrants
  • Assists other Sheriff’s Office staff, County departments, and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies as needed
  • As assigned, serves civil process documents, warrants, legal notices, and subpoenas
  • Conducts community policing activities to help prevent crime, reduce fear of crime, and improve community relations; talks with business owners and other people in assigned areas, listens to concerns, and offers suggestions to improve safety and security
  • Completes detailed reports and required technical paperwork
  • Maintains patrol vehicles and equipment in clean and effective operating order
  • May present education and information programs through community and school awareness projects; teaches and counsels residents on law enforcement activities, programs, and referral resources
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards of the Sheriff’s Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of satisfactory work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must pass and maintain license requirements set by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Must pass a thorough background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Technical certifications in CPR, First Aid, and specialized equipment are required
