Major Campus Police
Position Summary:
The Major of Campus Police is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors at Virginia Union University. Working closely with the Chief of Police, the Major plays a key role in managing, overseeing, and supervising the Virginia Union University Police Department. This position emphasizes public safety, community policing, and fostering student learning and development. A high degree of confidentiality, discretion, and leadership is essential.
Essential Functions:
- Assist the Chief of Police in supervising all aspects of the Police Department, including personnel management, budgeting, policy development, compliance, and incident reporting.
- Assume the role of Emergency Manager as directed by the Chief of Police, leading crisis response and coordination efforts.
- Provide leadership and motivation to police personnel, encouraging professional conduct and fostering a positive work environment.
- Oversee and manage patrol activities, ensuring they align with the department’s community policing focus and the university’s safety objectives.
- Apply problem-solving methods and community policing principles to address campus safety and law enforcement issues.
- Engage with campus departments and committees to enhance security and build relationships.
- Promote a strong commitment to customer service by building effective partnerships across the university, sharing appropriate information, and providing assistance when needed.
- Maintain an environment that is welcoming and respectful to all individuals, regardless of background, nationality, or role within the university.
- Provide high-level technical and administrative support to the Chief of Police, including significant participation in administrative decision-making and report preparation.
- Assume command of the department in the absence of the Chief, ensuring the continued safety and security of the campus community.
- Implement best practices in community policing to enhance crime reduction, promote safety, and build positive relationships with students and the broader campus community.
- Perform the duties of a sworn officer as necessary, including participation in patrols, investigations, and emergency response.
- Ability to run, bend, squat, and walk in various weather conditions on holidays, weekends, and nights.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
Requirements:
- Current Virginia Law Enforcement Officer certification as a sworn police officer.
- Advanced degree or equivalent training and work experience.
- At least 5 years of command experience at the rank of Lieutenant or above, preferably in a college or university setting.
- Be a citizen of the U.S.
- Undergo Background Investigation to include fingerprint based criminal history records
- Have a high school education
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Undergo a physical examination
- Be at least 18
- Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony in the Commonwealth
- Not have produced a positive result on pre-employment drug screening.
- Must be a certified Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Law. Enforcement Officer or have had the certification within the past 2 years.
- Must not be “Decertified” by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
