Salary: $81,144.00 – $119,868.00 Annually.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, patrol an assigned beat enforcing laws and maintaining order; work in partnership with the community to protect life and property; find innovative ways to solve neighborhood problems, and enhance the quality of life in the City of Redding.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate an automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, walk or utilize a police dog in patrolling an assigned area preventing crime and enforcing laws and ordinances.
  • Monitor citizens and property to assist in lowering the crime rate and adherence to laws and regulations.
  • Monitor the radio, cell phone, and mobile data computer; respond to calls for service.
  • Timely response to calls for assistance.
  • Investigate and prepare reports on accidents, offenses, and damages to property; give direction and appropriate information to citizens.
  • Complete reports in a timely and accurate manner with all the necessary information.
  • Make arrests, issue citations, and take a proactive approach to enforcement.
  • Fair enforcement of the laws. Enforce traffic laws to reduce accident rate.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports on arrests and impound property when necessary.
  • Complete and concise reports which contain all necessary information.
  • Perform traffic control.
  • Facilitate orderly traffic flow during special circumstances and emergencies.
  • Inspect establishments providing alcoholic beverages and entertainment.
  • Businesses comply with all laws.
  • Intervene in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order.
  • Maintain public safety.
  • Request medical attention when necessary.
  • Obtain prompt medical attention to aid victims and protect their safety.
  • Court appearances.
  • Appears in Court as directed, on time, prepared, with necessary information, and assist in case preparation.
  • Transport prisoners.
  • Safe transportation.
  • Gather information by utilizing interview and interrogation techniques.
  • Obtains necessary information. Utilizes acceptable departmental and professional techniques.
  • Report and remove traffic hazards (inoperative traffic/lighting equipment in roadway, abandoned vehicles); see that hazards are handled in a prompt manner.
  • Roadways are safe.
  • Provide escort, traffic control, and security for parades or public meetings.
  • Services provided as needed.
  • Participate in Departmentally approved training and practice the use of firearms.
  • Successfully complete relevant training and safe use of firearms.
  • Observe locations attractive to crime and develop plans to correct the problems observed.
  • Reduce crime, calls for service, and eliminate problems through proactive enforcement and problem oriented policing implementation.
  • Assist in searching, booking, fingerprinting, and supervising prisoners.
  • Insures officer and public/prisoner safety.
  • Answer inquiries from the public.
  • Provides appropriate information.
  • Keep records and prepare reports when appropriate.
  • Clear, complete reports are prepared in a timely manner with all necessary information.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and proactively enforce laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Other duties and related enforcement conducted in a manner to assist in reducing the crime rate and calls for service.
  • Work in a cooperative and appropriate fashion with SHASCOM Dispatch Center.
  • Cooperative and professional relationship maintained between officers and SHASCOM Dispatch Center.

Requirements:

  • Typical education includes a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently working with another agency OR meet California POST standards for a Police Officer.
  • Completion of probation and one (1) year of street patrol experience.
  • Applicants must attach a copy of a Basic POST certification.
  • Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment as a peace officer per government code section 1031.4
  • No felony convictions.
  • Shall be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
