Position Summary:

The protection of life and property by enforcing all City statutes, ordinances, and the laws and regulations, both traffic and criminal of the state for which the Police Department is held accountable.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrolling and monitoring the streets and businesses of Atlanta to ensure the protection of life and property by deterring criminal activity and promoting security within the community. Assisting fellow officers with interdepartmental tasks and activities.
  • Responding to the needs of the public by performing rescues, providing information and direction, mediating disputes, and deterring criminal activity within the community. Compiling reports, preparing cases for trial, and appearing in court.
  • Responds to emergency and assistance calls and assists and backs fellow officers as requested on domestic and theft calls, executing warrants, and serving subpoenas, etc. Responds to accident calls, gathers information at the accident scene, investigates and reconstructs severe injury or fatal accidents, interviews victims and witnesses, issues traffic citations, and backs fellow officers on traffic stops
  • Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, and managing dangerous situations; and interacts with E.M.T.
  • Investigates reported crimes by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants. Determines reasonable suspicion to detain and probable cause to search
  • Possess the ability to follow all precautionary measures when dealing with suspects who are known to be dangerous and the ability to remain calm in an emergency and life-threatening situation
  • Pursues fleeing and subdues resisting suspects; effects arrests; processes and transports prisoners
  • Follows-up on injured persons at medical facilities and follows court cases/legal actions. Maintaining and updating records for proper documentation.
  • Enters/retrieves data to/from computer system including stolen property, arrest and wanted information, investigation data, criminal records check, etc.
  • Can function with very general supervision. Has the ability to work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled employees, while maintaining responsibility for the completion of assigned tasks.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) required.
  • Candidates must have a current Georgia POST certification or the equivalent certification from another state at the time of application. Out of state applicants need to complete and pass the Georgia POST Equivalency of Training examination before the conditional offer of employment will be made.
  • Candidates must have two years of full time sworn law enforcement experience, including at least one year of experience as a patrol officer or operating in a patrol officer capacity.
  • Candidate must be employed as a full-time law enforcement officer currently or within the previous twelve months.
  • Candidates shall provide two felony arrest police incident reports they have completed for their respective departments and two vehicle accident reports they have completed for their respective departments.
