Emergency Communications Officer
Salary: $23.45 to $24.62
Position Summary:
This position receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, and dispatches sheriff, fire, medical and other emergency services, using multi-line telephone and 911 systems on an assigned shift. Communicates clearly to Sheriff Deputies and other first responders. Enters information into computer systems.
Essential Functions:
- Operate telephone and radio equipment to receive and transmit incoming/outgoing emergency calls to the 911 dispatch center;
- Interview callers to obtain detailed information related to the emergency;
- Provide emergency information and directions to callers as required;
- Determine the classification of requests for service and the priority nature of the request;
- Dispatch appropriate agencies and personnel to address the need for service;
- Maintain communication with caller and emergency personnel to receive and update information;
- Enter information into and retrieve information from computer and files as reference material or current information pertaining to calls. Maintain accurate log of calls, activities, reports, and related information. Retrieve and provide information from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to requesting field units.
- Effectively communicate and make decisions related to dispatching emergency vehicles under stressful work conditions;
- Listen and retain information communicated in emergency calls;
- Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports;
- Respond to citizen requests in a courteous and effective manner.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED;
- Customer service experience in stressful situations is helpful;
- Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification and CPR Certification is preferred;
- Idaho Law Enforcement Teletype System (ILETS) and NCIC Certification is preferred;
- Emergency Communications Officers attending a basic training academy must complete that academy, and six consecutive months of probation in that discipline with that hiring agency within eighteen (18) months of beginning employment in order to be certified. (Can be attended online)
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.
