Position Summary:

This position maintains the safety, security and sanitation needs of the Detention Center, including welfare of inmates, staff, and the public.

Essential Functions:

  • Enforces detention center rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains inmate discipline; maintains a secure and peaceful environment in the facility.
  • Receives, processes, and books incoming inmates and arrestees; explains facility rules, regulations and procedures; secures, inventories, and records personal property of each inmate; conducts interviews to obtain personal information; makes fingerprint and photographic records of incoming inmates; records inmate data in computer system and completes required documentation; determines appropriate classification of each inmate; assigns facility housing and issues clothing, bedding and personal hygiene items.
  • Conducts release of inmates per established procedures; completes applicable forms and ensures appropriate approvals; verifies identity of inmates and returns personal property; contacts victims upon release of inmate.
  • Supervises and monitors inmate activities inside the facility on a continual basis, including activities involving meals, recreation, cleaning activities, personal hygiene, medical care, visitation, religious services, commissary, mail, and telephone calls; conducts/records periodic population counts of inmates; logs daily movements and activities of inmates; transfers inmates to/from cell pods, booking areas, work details, court, medical facilities, or other locations as directed; escorts inmates from one area of the facility to another; administers disciplinary actions as appropriate, such as restriction to cells.
  • Coordinates, monitors, or performs various functions associated with ensuring the health, safety and welfare of inmates, which may include distribution of meal trays, removal/counting of meal trays, provision of clothing/bedding or other supplies, issuing of toiletries and hygiene kits, provision of medical aid/supplies, coordination of visitation and telephone communications, or distribution of mail; receives and responds to inmate requests; maintains accountability for razors and other supplies used by inmates.
  • Dispenses medications, administers first aid, and coordinates emergency medical care per established procedures; responds to inmate requests for other medical attention and determines whether additional medical care may be needed.
  • Maintains/assures security of detention center; operates master control board and monitors cameras/video surveillance equipment; controls opening/closing of all doors in facility; maintains visitor log; maintains key control; makes rounds of facility and performs periodic security checks; checks locks, alarms, and other security devices; conducts pat searches and strip searches of inmates; searches inmates, cells, mail, building, and ground areas to locate/remove contraband and to maintain security; responds to violence, alarms, or other emergency situations; mediates inmate problems, intervenes in physical confrontations, and assists in controlling/restraining violent/unruly inmates; assists in conducting searches for escapees.
  • Transports inmates to court, medical facilities, work details, other prisons or law enforcement facilities, or other locations as assigned; monitors behavior and activities of inmates on a continual basis during transport activities.
  • Coordinates various cleaning/maintenance activities within the detention facility; replenishes supplies in cell pods; distributes cleaning supplies to inmates; performs light housekeep tasks to maintain officer’s station.
  • Performs laundry cleaning/maintenance tasks for detention center; utilizes commercial washers/dryers to clean clothing, uniforms, bedding, towels, and other items; sorts and folds items; maintains inventory records of clothing and laundry supplies; replenishes supply of booking clothing and other items; discards damaged or unusable materials; escorts trustees to distribute or exchange clothing/linens; performs cleaning tasks to maintain laundry room facilities, such as cleaning dryer filters, wiping down equipment, sweeping floor, or emptying trash containers; reviews invoices for new items.
  • Processes a variety of documentation pertaining to booking activities, inmate records, court appearances, and release activities; receives arrest booking information sheets from officers and reviews for completeness; initiates booking checklist for each inmate entering/leaving facility; requests queries from dispatch staff as needed; ensures receipt of supplemental offender victim information forms for required offenses; prepares court disposition forms for each inmate scheduled to appear in Magistrate, State, or Superior Court; enters arrestee information, medical information, and visitation list into computer system; prepares handwritten or computer-generated bonds; completes DUI responsibility forms for individuals charged with DUI and released on bond before eight hours; obtains medical clearances when appropriate before accepting inmate custody; receives and processes court/bond orders and out-of-county bonds; receives/processes Justice fugitives and notifies correct deputy; verifies presence of proper documentation for detention or release of each inmate.
  • Receives admissions/release information for entire facility and maintains report reflecting current inmate count. Reviews daily court lists and dispositions; prepares court list and circulates to all areas.
  • Researches all warrants for information helpful in apprehending suspects; compares information on warrant to information received from GCIC/NCIC for an accurate warrant entry; enters warrant within allotted time and verifies accuracy; implements procedures to recall warrants as appropriate and avoid false arrests.
  • Calculates court costs and charges on bonds; processes paperwork for collection of court charges; prepares receipts for cash received; opens/closes batch and balances receipts at end of shift.
  • Maintains accountability for cash box; receives and records money from incoming inmates during booking process; distributes cash/checks to outgoing inmates; logs all entries into individual inmate accounts.
  • Maintains logs, records, and reports of all incidents, accidents, population counts, and other activities; prepares and submits maintenance request forms to report maintenance problems; prepares food count sheets to advise kitchen staff of meal requirements.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, incident reports, disciplinary reports, headcount sheets, inmate observation sheets, use of force reports, inspection reports, maintenance requests, public defender referrals, booking documentation, arrest booking information sheets, checklists, fingerprint cards, classification records, administrative segregation sheets, property inventory records, money transaction logs, inmate checks, court disposition forms, inmate custody transfer forms, deposit verification forms, medical charts, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, arrest/booking documentation, incident reports, inmate request forms, property release forms, pod rosters, movement sheets, administrative segregation sheets, warrants, medication sheets, supplemental offender victim information forms, medical clearance forms, invoices, medical histories, medical charts, laboratory reports, radiology reports, inmate handbooks, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, lists, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, database, or other software programs. Operates a variety of standard and specialized equipment and tools associated with work activities, which may include a motor vehicle, transport van/bus, firearms, chemical weapons, emergency equipment, security/alarm system, control panel, surveillance camera/monitor, door control panel, alcohol testing equipment, drug testing kits, processing kits, fingerprint processing machine, handcuffs, restraint chair, restraining devices, baton, flashlight, fire extinguisher, photographic equipment, tape recorder, protective shield, safety equipment, medical/dental instruments, medical supplies, nebulizer, sterilizer, EKG machine, radio/communications equipment, telephone, washing machine, dryer, or general office equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees, inmates, visitors, and other individuals.
  • Monitors inventory of department equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates orders for new/replacement materials.
  • Performs general customer service functions; answers internal/external telephones; directs callers/visitors to appropriate personnel; responds to routine questions/complaints and initiates problem resolution. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.
  • Communicates with staff of adjoining shifts to gather/exchange information on activities, problems, special situations, or other areas requiring attention; reviews activity logs, incident reports, and general correspondence to maintain awareness of current issues. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, inmates, law enforcement personnel, court personnel, attorneys, bonding companies, medical providers, visitors, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience in a detention or corrections environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of standardized rules, procedures or operations applicable to the work performed is preferred.
  • Considerable training is required to do the full range of standard assignments.
  • Candidate must have no felony convictions or significant misdemeanor convictions.
  • Successfully pass the Criminal Background Check and Motor Vehicles Report.
