Detention Officer
Salary: $36,931 – $60,946.
Position Summary:
The Surry County Sheriff’s Office is looking for an individual who is highly motivated and eager to join a team of outstanding individuals. Detention Officers are responsible for the safety and security of the Surry County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. The sheriff’s office has policies and procedures established to provide direction to the detention staff. If selected, the detention officer would be responsible for the direct supervision of inmates and preserving the personal rights of the inmates while they are incarcerated. Some of the duties of the detention officer include, but are not limited to, providing safety and security inside the detention center, processing inmates, maintaining court documents, serving meals, escorting inmates, etc.
Requirements:
- At least 21 years of age or older.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Have obtained required State of North Carolina certifications in the requested field of service (or able to attend these certification courses with passing results).
- Training is provided to all detention officers in order to prepare for the hazards of law enforcement work.
- The applicant would need to have good communication skills and be able to interview people with tact.
- Applicants must be able to physically perform the basic operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, talking, hearing and performing repetitive motions.
- Applicants must be able to perform work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Applicants must possess the visual acuity to determine accuracy, and neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
