Position Summary:

A patrol Deputy Sheriff performs general police work by patrolling the County of Louisa in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances, serving of warrants, making arrests and responding to calls for service.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrolling the county for prevention and suppression of crime, enforcement of laws (federal and state) and local ordinances, investigation of illegal or suspicious activities and ensuring the protection of life and property
  • Responds to calls relayed by radio, including domestic disputes, arrests, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons, and stranded motorists.
  • Carries out investigations of assigned cases; collects evidence; identifies and apprehends offenders; interviews complainants; victims; witnesses and suspects; conducts follow-up investigations as required.
  • Responds to crime scenes; examines crime scene to identify and collect evidence; photographs scenes; lifts, collects, and makes composite fingerprints
  • Prepares detailed offense reports and prepares sworn affidavits for the issuance of or actual execution of search/arrest warrants
  • Locating and making physical arrests of law violators or wanted subjects
  • Serving as a first responder in emergency situations such as accidents, medical issues, natural disasters etc.
  • Interviewing witnesses/suspects, preparing written reports, and appearing in court as a witness
  • Documenting work activities into a records management system and managing sensitive data
  • Transporting or escorting prisoners to courtrooms, prisons/jails or medical facilities
  • Transports prisoners and EDPs (Emotionally Disturbed Persons) to and from confinement locations, hospitals, other jurisdictions, and escort them to and from court or hearings
  • Executes, serves, and returns, as required, civil and criminal processes, court orders and Division of Motor Vehicles suspension orders
  • Affects arrests, forcibly if necessary
  • Employs defensive tactics, maneuvers, or deploys less lethal weapons when necessary and appropriate
  • Conducts searches of buildings with an ability to search small, confined spaces or attics when necessary
  • Must maintain physical fitness in order to perform the essential duties of the position
  • Must have the ability to use reasonable force when necessary
  • Uses bodily force to gain entrance through barriers to search or seize persons or property
  • Prepares detailed investigative offense reports, issues traffic summons, tow sheets, lab sheets and other administrative paperwork
  • Operates an emergency vehicle during the day and night
  • Loads, unloads, aims, and fires handguns, shotguns, and other firearms from a variety of body positions
  • Performs searches of persons
  • Performs tasks that may require lifting, carrying, or dragging heavy objects such as an injured person
  • Provides back up to primary law enforcement agencies conducting criminal or traffic investigations
  • Appears in court as a witness to give testimony
  • Escorts funeral processions, parades, and other special events
  • Provides first aid and other assistance when needed
  • Extradites fugitives that are apprehended in other states
  • Performing the extradition of warrant subjects to include out-of-state and air prisoner transport
  • Works hours that conflict with regular eight-hour work schedule to include overtime
  • Serving a as a Sheriff’s Office representative during community events
  • Maintaining ability to testify as a credible witness in court
  • Adhering to global and law enforcement policy and procedures
  • Attending meetings and trainings as required
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Possess valid Va. operator’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • 21 years of age or older at time of graduation from training academy
  • Be able to pass background check and drug screen
  • Possess valid Va. operator’s license and a good driving record
  • Applicant will be required to attend and successfully complete Criminal Justice Academy training to be certified
  • Certified applicants preferred, but entry level will be considered
  • Applicants must be willing to work 12-hour shifts and be available for callouts.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, within twelve (12) months of hire, and the ability to maintain, the following training and/or certifications:
    • Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Law Enforcement Officer – certification
    • CPR – certification
    • Intoxylizer 5000 Certification
    • Firearms Certification
