Deputy Sheriff – Patrol

Salary: $53,565.78 /Annually.

Position Summary:

1. Reports to: Patrol Sgt./ Chief Deputy I Sheriff
2. Directs: This is a non-supervisory position.
3.Other: Has frequent contact with other law enforcement agencies, judges, attorneys, other employees, county officials, criminals, crime victims, and the general public.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols county with emphasis on traffic safety, assisting public (e.g., stranded motorists, providing directions), answering complaints, safeguarding property, and enforcing laws and ordinances;
  • Assists jail personnel, Department of Public Safety employees, probation officers, and other law enforcement personnel when necessary;
  • Addresses public groups concerning citizen crime watch and other related information sessions on department functions;
  • Promotes positive community relations by conducting educational talks to students, citizens, and civic groups;
  • Oversees periodic vehicle maintenance;
  • Investigates traffic accidents, civil disturbances, and crimes against persons and property; Assists federal, state, local law enforcement officials with investigations and emergencies; Assists or rescues individuals in need of aid;
  • Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints;
  • Controls the scene of traffic accidents, takes reports and directs traffic;
  • Conducts searches of buildings, vehicles, outdoor areas, persons, and other objects to detect potential weapons, contraband, evidence, hazards, stolen property, or to find lost persons or objects for the purpose of seizing, investigating, and /or rescuing;
  • Serves subpoenas and civil papers;
  • Removes children from their residences with orders from the court in conjunction with Child Protective Services;
  • Conducts surveillance, undercover assignments, and special assignments as required; Completes paperwork and necessary reports associated with offenses and arrests;
  • Transports prisoners and mental patients to and from court, hospitals, funerals, or correctional facilities as required and guards prisoners at trials and during hospital stays;
  • Serves as Bailiff in court hearings and testifies in court as required;
  • Takes telephone calls from the general public to answer questions and provide information; Performs animal and vermin control and removes/relocates livestock from roads;
  • Prepares and submits reports to Sheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriff as necessary;
  • Attends continuing education as required by TCLEOSE to maintain certification; and, Directs traffic when necessary to avoid hazardous traffic conditions.

Requirements:

  • Licenses and other requirements: High school graduation, or its equivalent; basic certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE); and appropriate Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to comply with departmental physical agility requirements as specified in the Aransas County Sheriff’s Office policy and procedures manual.
