Position Summary:
This entry-level sworn position provides criminal and traffic law enforcement services to the public by performing the following essential functions under the direction of the Sheriff of Queen Anne’s County after the conclusion of a period of probation and successful completion of a recognized police academy.
Essential Functions:
- Provides cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service
- Acquires and maintains a current awareness of the requirements of Maryland criminal and traffic laws
- Enforces State criminal and motor vehicle laws. Responds to calls for service from public.
- Through routine patrol, deters, detects, and prevents violations of State criminal and motor vehicle laws.
- Conducts investigations into criminal and serious traffic incidents to identify perpetrators.
- Initiates prosecutions by making arrests of or issuing summons to criminal law violators.
- Appears in courts and provides testimony in support of prosecutions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Must have or be scheduled to complete a police academy recognized by the State of Maryland within one year of being hired by the Sheriff or his designee.
- Must successfully complete a police academy within one year of being hired and Obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission. Must possess a Class C or higher Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of appointment to position by the Sheriff or Under Sheriff.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one (1) year of experience as a certified law enforcement officer in the State of Maryland, or an amount of education and experience required for certification by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
