Deputy Sheriff – Detention Cadet
Salary: $3,750.00 Monthly.
Position Summary:
Under direct supervisor, is responsible for controlling, securing and managing inmates at Bexar County jail facilities under the supervision of experienced officers; and performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions:
- Controls, secures and manages inmates at the Adult Detention Center and Jail Annex.
- Supervises inmates assigned to work detail such as serving meals, preparing laundry, and performing routine maintenance in the jail facility.
- Books and classifies inmates.
- Transfers and transport inmates.
- Performs inmate inspections, shakedowns and room searches.
- Responds to and resolves crisis situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies and restraining physically violent inmates.
- Assists with inmates personal needs such as telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits and commissary.
- Completes and processes required paperwork on inmates and events occurring within the jail facilities.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements:
- Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate.
- Knowledge of jail environment work; knowledge of basic safety standards and procedures.
- Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing; skill in defending self.
- Ability to read and comprehend narrative hand-written materials, including pass-on logs, round sheets, caution tags, cell search logs, etc.
- Ability to read and comprehend printed materials, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), fire procedures, and the Inmate Handbook.
- Ability to read and comprehend computer screen information and data when booking individuals.
- Ability to prepare hand-written activity logs, and narrative incident and offense reports in a legible and grammatically acceptable manner to permit comprehension by the receiving party.
- Ability to understand and exchange information with supervisors and co-workers when receiving assignments, instructions, shift change information, and while performing assigned duties and tasks.
- Ability to understand and exchange information with the general public, including attorneys, jail visitors, and maintenance personnel.
- Ability to interact with inmates, and to understand and comprehend inmate responses to questions.
- Ability to provide verbal direction to inmates to affect conformance to rules, regulations, and other directives.
- Ability to add and subtract when taking prisoner counts and reconciling discrepancies.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must have no prior arrest records for: driving while intoxicated, driving while impaired, no possession or trafficking of illegal narcotics or drugs, assault, stalking, family violence, theft, crimes of moral turpitude, or sexual offenses.
- Military applicants must disclose any non-judicial discipline involving the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
- Must have never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or within the last ten (10) years from the date of the court order
- Must not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense.
- Must have never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class A misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years; must have never been convicted of any family violence offense.
- Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle.
- Must not be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
- Must not have a felony conviction or be on probation.
- Requires honorable discharge if a veteran.
- Requires completion of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office written Exam.
- Must pass a physical agility test.
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
- Must pass a psychological and physical exam; must secure and maintain TCOLE Basic Jailer Certification within one year from employment date.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- May work weekends and perform shift work.
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
