Deputy Sheriff
Position Summary:
Maintains law and order and serves legal processes of courts.
Essential Functions:
• Patrol Andrews County to enforce laws and arrest violators.
• Take control of crime scenes and maint84n security of scene during investigation.
• Investigate all crimes reported including, but not limited -to: Murder> Aggravated Assault, Sexual Assault. Arson. Narcotics -Trafficking, Family Violence, Burglary, Theft, Forgery,. Harassment, Criminal Mischief, DWI,. Reckless Driving.
• Collect, preserve, and process evidence of crimes.
• Transport bodies to forensic lab and witness autopsies.
• Interview witnesses and record statements.
• Prepare accurate records of incidents.
• Compiles cases with County Attorney
• Presents felony cases to Grand Jury
• Investigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons.
• Assume control at traffic accidents to maintain traffic flow and assist accident victims.
• Investigate accidents other than traffic, such as industrial.
• Quell disturbances
• Listen to complaints from the public and take action as warranted.
• Locate and take persons into custody on arrest warrants.
• Serve subpoenas and summonses and keep records of dispositions.
• Testifies in Court as needed.
• Assist with Jail activities as needed.
• Transport or escort prisoners between courtrooms, medical facilities and other detention facilities.
• Transport prisoners from other detention facilities, both inside Texas and from other states and /or countries.
• Transport prisoners to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice upon conviction and sentencing.
• Transport psychiatric patients to State Hospital or other medical facilities.
• Maintain security in courtrooms.
• Maintain order at public events.
• Protect the safety of the public by serving as weather spotter.
• Checking reports of gas leaks or oil spills.
• Escort funeral processions.
• Assist stranded motorists.
• Any other duty assigned by the Sheriff or Chief Deputy.
Requirements:
• Must exhibit firearms proficiency with required weapons on a yearly basis.
• Must maintain a current Texas Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record .
• Must be capable of effectively communicating in person and over the telephone and radio with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. ·
• Must be mentally alert and capable of remembering faces, names, oral instructions, and details, as well as to identify a hazard in order to avoid it by reporting immediately. or, if directed, by taking corrective measures.
• Must be prepared to work in various degrees of outdoor exposure.
• Must be able to work in an often stressful environment when dealing with the general public who may be upset, threatening or abusive. · ·
• Must be familiar with and follow the Universal Precautions for dealing with blood and other bodily fluids.
• Must pass a county physical examination and drug screen and be willing to submit to random drug screening as directed by the Sheriff.
• Must be able to relate well with a variety of backgrounds and positively represent Andrews County in those contacts.
