Deputy Chief of Police (Major)
Salary: $130,827 – $144,600.

Position Summary:
The Deputy Chief of Police (Major) effectively plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates the work of assigned bureaus of the Police Department. Duties are performed with considerable latitude in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and General Orders received from the Chief of Police. May assume command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police.
Essential Functions:
- Serves as executive-level representative for the Office of the Chief of Police.
- Directs and supervises the activities of the assigned bureau personnel and associative task forces to include large-scale training initiatives, substantial asset purchases, personnel allocation, hiring, performance management, and internal investigations as they relate to complaints or policy violations.
- Acts as liaison between Board of Supervisors, Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, community advisory teams, Chief’s crime prevention council, and media.
- Provides oversight for monthly divisional reports and ensures activity is aligned with established strategic goals.
- Acts as Incident Commander during critical incidents or high-profile events when executive-level decision making authority is necessary.
- Interprets new laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations and enacts departmental policy/procedural changes when necessary.
- Performs related, compulsory work.
Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university OR active enrollment in an accredited baccalaureate program with at least 60 credits attained.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a commander position to be of a wide and progressively responsible nature in police service and administration.
- Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License; or obtain one within 60 days of employment.
- Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia; or become a certified law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of employment.
Preferred Requirements:
- Successful completion of FBI National Academy or Southern Police Institute, Professional Executive Leadership (PELS), Command College, or comparable senior leadership level training
