Corrections Officer
Salary: $21.05 – $29.45 / Hour.
Position Summary:
The purpose of this classification is to provide general safety and security of the facility, officers, inmates and the general public during an assigned shift. Monitors inmate activity within the facility and on work detail. May be responsible for inmate transportation. May be responsible for control room operation and accountability for key issue, log book maintenance and related security measures.
Essential Functions:
- Provides assistance with any security matters at the Jackson County Correctional Institute on assigned shift; conducts investigations on potential security matters; conduct routine security inspections of facility throughout shift; conducts isolation and dorms checks; takes head counts throughout the shift; acts on emergency situations following established protocol; breaks up fights among inmates; supervises investigation of rule violation on assigned shift.
- Monitors inmate activity within the facility and on work detail; observes physical condition of inmates; oversees shakedown of inmates; oversees inmate food service; distributes medication, packages, mail, and other items to inmates; notifies inmates of required attendance at classes or other engagements; may serve on the inmate classification committee; may conduct inmate drug testing; may assist with inmate transfer process; may participate in transportation of inmates.
- May maintain effective control of keys, locks, doors, and other locking devices; maintains a working key board and back-up key system.
- Assists in transitional center operations to include Transport and Travel.
- Conducts security and PREA checks of facility.
- Responds to telephone and radio calls.
- Completes duty and incident reports.
- Operates a personal computer, copier, fax machine, phone system, communication system, and other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the possible use of word processing, database, or other system software.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent with one to two years related work experience and some knowledge of the daily operations and security matters at a correctional facility; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have the ability to obtain POST certification from the Georgia Department of Corrections.
