Salary: $47,881.00 – $63,939.00 Annually

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a shift commander (Corrections Sergeant), the corrections deputy maintains all security requirements of a designated section of the correctional facility (jail). Carries out assignments as directed or in accordance with Corrections Division and Departmental policy.

Essential Functions:

  1. Receives and processes prisoners, through the computerized booking system, fingerprinting, photographing and so forth. Accompanies prisoner to designated housing unit. Receives personal property.
  2. Conducts regular floor counts and cell checks to ensure that all inmates are accounted for and properly secured. Observes inmate behavior and takes appropriate actions in case of fights, property damage or other incidents.
  3. Distributes meals to inmates collects and counts dishes and eating utensils.
  4. Releases inmates from cells for visits with attorneys, bondsmen, ministers, or family members.
  5. Maintains a log of shift activity, prepare incident reports. Confers with prior shift members for potential problem areas.
  6. Oversees inmate workers.
  7. Participates in periodic searches of inmates and cells as part of the security process.
  8. Provides medications and other medical care. Performs CPR and emergency First Aid when required in emergency situations.
  9. As authorized, releases inmates.
  10. Transports inmates to court, hospital, doctor and other correctional facilities, etc.
  11. Guards inmates in hospitals, courts and other places outside the jail as required.
  12. Carries out Court Officer duties when so assigned.
  13. Proficient in operating a car in a safe manner.
  14. Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions.
  15. Load, unload, aim and fire handguns and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.
  16. Manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.
  17. Perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons and contraband.
  18. Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the law for the purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior/response and performing enforcement activities involving inmates and the public.
  19. Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics maneuvers and approved non-lethal weapons.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with college courses in Corrections preferred.
  • Must successfully complete or have completed the Michigan Sheriff Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) 160 hr Local Corrections Officer Academy when requested.
  • Experience in the Corrections field at the County level is preferred.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record. No prior felony convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to receive and maintain a valid CPL (Concealed Pistol License).
  • Written Exam – Must have passed the Michigan Sheriff’s Association’s EMPCO Written Exam and subit documentation within 15 days of position’s closing date. Information on how to register for the exam can be found at www.empco.net/msa
  • Physical Exam – Applicants must have passed physical agiility examination within 15 days of the position’s closing date.
