Salary: $56,142.83 per year

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform commissioned peace officer tasks and perform inmate supervision, custody, control, escort, intake, release, building security and jail recordkeeping tasks in an assigned area. The work is performed under the supervision of the Sergeant-Correctional Shift Commander and Corporal assistants.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the enforcement of general criminal laws of the State and violation of ordinances of the County within the parameters of State statutes, County Ordinances and Executive Order.
  • Performs armed and unarmed transports of prisoners to and from the facility, to other institutions for appointments or commitments.
  • Performs armed and unarmed security watches outside of the facility.
  • Serves arrest warrants within the confines of the Criminal Justice Facility.
  • Conducts initial investigation of any crimes/ serious incidents occurring within the confines of department operations, programs, or facilities.
  • Secures scene of any such incident, protects evidence, identifies witnesses, and prepares investigation report.
  • May be on-call for emergency operations or necessary peace officer functions.
  • Performs normal duties of a Correctional Officer; including intake of arrested persons and release of inmates, internal transports of inmates, oversees and supervises inmate activities and movements in housing units, and regulates movement of inmates, employees, and visitors within the facility and performs security checks of housing units and work release.
  • Must be available for any shift or day assigned and mandatory overtime as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a general high school or vocational tech school or equivalent
  • Certification as Class A – MO Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) according to RSMO 590
  • Must successfully complete the Correctional Officer Testing Process. Minimum score of 70%.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Requires the mental and emotional balance to competently handle a position with inherent authority over others in a responsible, mature, and professional manner, to display self-control and react appropriately in stressful or chaotic situations, and to comply with and enforce rules and regulations.
  • Requires courteous, effective oral and written communication skills, sometimes under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to intervene in inmate altercations; restrain or subdue combative individuals — all of which involves the ability to complete tasks requiring physical activity under potentially unsafe or adverse conditions.
  • Ability to participate in on-going training, some of which may involve physical activity.
  • Must read well enough to understand written procedures, policies, etc.
  • Must write well enough to complete incident reports, daily logs, etc.
  • Must be free of felony convictions or pending charges which could result in a felony conviction.
  • Must become qualified as a Correctional Peace Officer on standard duty weapon within 120 days of appointment
  • Candidates not currently Class A certified with Missouri should contact the POST Program to obtain a Certification Application Handbook and guidelines for re-certification.
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a full criminal background check.
